Brooke showed him her banking application.

Reid had already canceled her primary card, changed several passwords, and transferred most of the money from the account containing her nursing savings.

She had worked for eight years before taking maternity leave.

Almost everything she had saved was gone.

Julian’s expression became serious.

“This isn’t a disagreement over money. He is limiting your ability to leave.”

He continued searching through the copied files.

Among them were emails between Reid, Morgan, and Celia.

In one message, Celia suggested arranging a stressful family meeting so Brooke would cry in front of witnesses.

Morgan replied that they needed to move quickly before Brooke became “strong enough to ask questions.”

The most troubling document was titled “Rowan Transition Plan.”

It proposed hiring a private evaluator connected to the Halstead family, describing Brooke’s exhaustion as severe instability and moving Rowan into Celia’s home before any formal hearing took place.

At the bottom of the document was a date.

The following morning.

Julian looked directly at Brooke.

“You have less than twenty-four hours.”

The Dinner That Exposed Them

Laurel arranged temporary accommodation through Harbor Light, a nonprofit organization supporting women and parents facing financial or legal control.

Julian began preparing emergency court documents.

But he needed direct proof that the Halsteads were intentionally creating a false case.

That evening, Brooke returned home and placed a small recorder inside Rowan’s diaper bag.

At seven o’clock, Celia arrived.

Morgan came with her.

She introduced herself as a family friend, although Brooke had already seen dozens of photographs proving otherwise.

During dinner, Reid placed a set of papers beside Brooke’s plate.

“Sign these,” he said. “They simply confirm that tomorrow’s evaluation is voluntary.”

Brooke kept her eyes on the papers.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Celia set down her glass.

“Then we will explain that you had a dangerous emotional episode while holding Rowan.”

Brooke’s fingers went cold.

“That never happened.”

“People believe respectable families,” Celia replied. “Especially when several witnesses tell the same story.”

Morgan leaned forward.

“Rowan needs stability. Sometimes loving a child means admitting another woman may be better prepared to raise him.”

Brooke looked at her.

“And you believe that woman should be you?”

Morgan glanced at Reid before answering.

“Reid and I have discussed what the future might look like.”

Reid’s face tightened.

“That’s enough.”

Brooke signed only the page confirming that she had received the documents.

Then she lifted Rowan from his bassinet and went upstairs.

Behind her, Celia lowered her voice.

“By tomorrow afternoon, this will be over.”

The recorder captured every word.

Sixteen Floors to Freedom

At two in the morning, Brooke packed Rowan’s medicine, diapers, medical records, feeding supplies, and the knitted blanket her grandmother had made.

She took only one suitcase for herself.

At 6:55, Reid left for the office.

Brooke waited five minutes, placed Rowan in his carrier, and stepped into the hallway.

The elevator indicator suddenly began moving upward.

Reid was returning.

Brooke could not reach the stairs without crossing directly in front of the elevator.

Then she remembered the maintenance door at the far end of the corridor.

She pushed the suitcase ahead of her, hurried into the service area, and closed the door just as the elevator opened.

Reid’s footsteps moved through the hallway.

“Brooke?” he called. “Where are you?”

Rowan began to stir.

Brooke held him close and gently rocked the carrier.

Through the narrow window, she watched Reid enter the apartment and return seconds later with his phone in his hand.

“Do not let my wife leave the building,” he told security. “She’s confused, and she has taken my son.”

The lie removed Brooke’s final doubt.

She carried Rowan and dragged the suitcase down sixteen flights of service stairs.

By the time she reached the underground parking area, her legs were trembling.

Laurel waited in a gray SUV near the exit.

Brooke climbed inside.

Before Laurel could drive away, a security guard lowered the gate.

“Mrs. Halstead, your husband reported an emergency,” he said. “He claims the child may be at risk.”

Laurel displayed her medical identification.

“The baby is traveling to a medical appointment. Unless you have a valid legal order, preventing us from leaving could create serious consequences for this building.”

The guard hesitated.

Reid appeared between the parked vehicles, running toward them.

“Stop her!” he shouted. “She cannot make decisions for herself!”

Brooke lowered the window several inches.

For the first time in months, her voice did not shake.

“I am not confused, Reid. I finally understand exactly who you are.”

The gate rose.

Laurel drove into the morning traffic before Reid could reach the vehicle.

The Story Reid Told Everyone

Harbor Light operated from a quiet house outside Beaverton.

The staff gave Brooke a private room, a crib, fresh clothes for Rowan, and a phone Reid could not track.

That afternoon, Julian requested protective measures and submitted the audio recording, altered documents, financial statements, and messages.

Reid reacted by contacting relatives, colleagues, and mutual friends.

He claimed Brooke had experienced a serious breakdown and had disappeared with Rowan.

Celia released a carefully written statement saying the family was deeply concerned and wanted only to “bring the baby home safely.”

Within two days, Brooke’s name had become part of a story she did not recognize.

Some people believed Reid immediately.

Others quietly contacted her sister, Erin.

Erin called Brooke from a borrowed phone.

“Reid’s attorney offered to pay my overdue mortgage if I said you had always been unstable,” she revealed. “I recorded the conversation.”
