My Husband Drained Our Kids’ $186,000 College Fund for His Pregnant Mistress—His Late Father’s 26-Year-Old Widow—Then Froze My Accounts and Said, “Take the Kids and Get Out Tonight,” as a Hurricane Hit. He Thought I Had Nothing Left… Until I Opened the Sealed Folder His Father Had Given Me Before He Died

Part 2 of 3

Nearly $186,000.

I opened the investment app.

The balance read almost zero.

My hands started shaking.

“Where is the college money?”

Paige looked away.

Callum didn’t.

“I used part of it for the down payment on the house Paige and I are buying.”

For the first time that evening, I raised my voice.

“That money belongs to Micah and Taryn!”

“Legally, it was an account in my name.”

“We built that fund together for eleven years.”

He stepped closer.

“And I built most of this life, Laurel.”

That was the lie he had told himself often enough to believe.

I had started my own corporate risk-consulting firm six years earlier. Some years I earned more than he did. I had covered renovations, vacations, school expenses, insurance, and much of the mortgage while he poured money into speculative business deals.

Yet somehow, in Callum’s rewritten version of our marriage, everything belonged to him.

“You used our children’s future to buy a home for her?”

Paige finally looked at me.

“It’s for our baby too.”

I will never forget that sentence.

Not because it hurt me.

Because it showed me exactly who they were.

One More Betrayal

I walked back through the rain toward the SUV.

Taryn immediately opened her door.

“Mom, are we going inside?”

I forced myself to smile.

“Not tonight, sweetheart. Plans changed.”

Micah coughed beneath the blanket.

I started the car and drove toward a hotel near the hospital district, moving slowly through flooded intersections.

Halfway there, my phone began buzzing repeatedly.

Three emails.

Then five.

Then nine.

The first was from Carter Vale Logistics, one of my largest clients.

They were suspending our contract.

The next client had received an email supposedly from me containing insulting remarks about its leadership team.

Another had received confidential files that I would never have shared.

Someone had logged into my business email account from my home network.

My laptop had been in my office upstairs.

Callum had access to the house.

He had not merely planned to end our marriage.

He had planned to make sure I had nowhere financially comfortable to land afterward.

By the time we reached the hotel, my daughter had noticed my hands trembling.

“Mom?”

I turned off the engine.

“Everything is going to be okay.”

I had no proof yet.

But for the first time that night, I remembered something.

A sealed navy-blue folder.

Everett had given it to me ten days before he passed away.

The Folder Everett Told Me Not to Open

Everett had come to my office alone.

He looked unusually tired.

He placed a folder on my desk, sealed with red legal tape.

“Keep this somewhere Callum cannot find it.”

I had laughed nervously.

“That sounds ominous.”

Everett hadn’t smiled.

“Promise me.”

So I did.

I stored it in a private safe-deposit box connected to my business.

Before leaving, Everett turned back at the door.

“If my son ever makes you believe you have nothing, open it.”

At the time, I assumed it concerned an old investment or family insurance policy.

Now, sitting inside a hotel room while Micah slept and Taryn watched television beside him, I understood.

The next morning, once the roads became passable, I drove to the bank.

My attorney, Simone Adler, met me there.

We opened the box together.

Inside was Everett’s folder.

And inside that folder was the truth Callum had never bothered to learn.

The House Was Never His

The first document was a property trust.

Our Wilmington house did not belong solely to Callum.

Eight years earlier, when Callum’s business had nearly collapsed, Everett had quietly paid off a substantial portion of our mortgage.

In exchange, ownership had been moved into a family property trust.

I was named co-trustee.

More importantly, the beneficiaries were Micah and Taryn.

Callum could live in the house while we were married.

He could not sell it, borrow against it, transfer it, or remove the children’s primary guardian without triggering a review by the second trustee.

That second trustee was me.

I looked at Simone.

“He told me it was his house.”

She continued reading.

“It isn’t.”

The next document concerned Everett’s estate.

Paige had been left a generous cash inheritance.

But the controlling interest in Everett’s private investment company had been placed in trust for his grandchildren.

Again, I had been named trustee until they reached adulthood.

Callum had assumed his father’s holdings would eventually become his.

They wouldn’t.

Then came the letter.

It was handwritten.

Laurel,

I hope you never need these documents. I love my son, but loving someone does not require being blind to their character.

Over the past year, I have seen financial decisions from Callum that concern me. I have also seen changes in Paige that I do not understand.

If something happens to me, protect the children first.

My eyes filled with tears.

Simone placed her hand gently over the letter.

“There’s more.”
