Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Left for a 74-Day European Vacation While I Was Recovering from a Serious Health Crisis—Hours Later, Every Bottle of My Daily Treatment Had Vanished, Every Door Was Locked from the Outside, and Detectives Eventually Uncovered a Secret Connected to His First Wife

Part 2 of 3

A woman climbed out.

Blonde.

Dark green jacket.

She kissed him.

Marcus paused the video.

“Do you know her?”

I stared at the screen.

My stomach dropped.

“Melissa.”

She worked with Jason.

He had always called her his project coordinator.

The video continued.

Melissa opened the bag.

Inside were dozens of orange prescription bottles.

Mine.

She laughed.

Jason laughed with her.

Then they drove away together.

I couldn’t say a word.

Marcus quietly closed the laptop.

“Mrs. Bennett…”

He hesitated for only a second.

“Yesterday morning your husband increased your life insurance policy to two million dollars.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“He also named himself the sole beneficiary.”

The room became completely silent.

For the first time since waking up, I stopped wondering whether Jason had abandoned me.

He hadn’t.

Someone had planned every minute of what happened after that front door closed.

The House Didn’t Feel Like Mine Anymore

I left the hospital four days later with a walker, two grocery bags full of medication, and strict instructions from my rheumatologist.

“You survived because help arrived when it did,” she said. “If you ever skip these medications again, it may not end the same way.”

I nodded without answering.

It wasn’t a warning I needed to hear twice.

Detective Marcus Hale met me outside the entrance instead of letting me take a cab alone.

“Your attorney is already at your house,” he said.

“Am I allowed back in?”

“Yes. The crime scene technicians finished this morning.”

The drive home felt much longer than it should have.

Every traffic light gave me another minute to picture myself lying on that hallway floor, staring at the empty pill organizer while wondering if anyone would find me before my body simply gave up.

Marcus parked in front of the house.

The plywood covering the broken front door had already been replaced with a temporary door installed by the fire department.

Yellow evidence tape still fluttered around one side of the porch.

Neighbors glanced through their curtains.

Someone across the street lowered a phone after recognizing me.

I unlocked the door with the spare key the police had recovered.

The house smelled stale.

Everything looked exactly as I had left it.

My coffee mug still sat beside the couch.

The blanket Jason had tucked around me before leaving was folded neatly over the armrest.

The television remote rested beside the empty pill organizer.

It looked like an ordinary living room.

Only now I knew someone had carefully arranged that room to become the last place I would ever see.

Marcus let me walk through the house at my own pace.

The kitchen cabinets were open.

Evidence labels still marked several drawers.

A crime scene photographer had left small numbered stickers beside the electrical panel in the garage.

I stopped in front of the medicine cabinet.

It was completely empty.

Not one forgotten bottle.

Not one loose tablet.

Jason hadn’t panicked.

He had made sure there would be nothing left behind.

Marcus quietly handed me a folder.

“These are the preliminary findings.”

Inside were photographs taken before anything had been moved.

Pictures of the disconnected breaker.

Pictures of the modem with its power cable removed.

Pictures of the shutoff notice from the utility company.

I frowned.

“I thought the electricity was simply disconnected.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward one photograph.

“Someone submitted requests several days before the trip to suspend the electricity, water, and internet service. They were all scheduled to stop within the same hour after your husband’s flight departed.”

I looked at him.

“Jason?”

“The requests came from his laptop using his account credentials.”

I slowly closed the folder.

Every explanation I had tried giving Jason over the years suddenly sounded ridiculous.

He forgot.

He misunderstood.

He got busy.

None of that fit anymore.

This had taken planning.

My attorney, Rebecca Sloan, arrived carrying another folder almost as thick.

She didn’t waste time.

“Claire, I need you to look at your banking records.”

I sat at the dining table while she spread statements across the polished wood.

At first I didn’t notice anything unusual.

Then she circled several transactions.

Large transfers.

One after another.

Always just below the amount that would automatically alert both account holders.

My stomach tightened.

“What am I looking at?”

“Your husband emptied almost everything from your joint savings over the past three months.”

She slid another document toward me.

A checking account I had never seen before.

Two names appeared at the top.

Jason Bennett.

Melissa Carter.

I stared at Melissa’s name for several seconds.

“How much?”

Rebecca answered quietly.

“Almost all of your emergency savings.”

I remembered every overtime shift I had worked before my illness became severe.

Every vacation we postponed.

Every Christmas when Jason insisted we save instead of spending.

He had called it building our future.

Apparently he had been building someone else’s.

Rebecca uncapped her pen.

“I already filed emergency paperwork to freeze every remaining joint account.”

“Can he still access anything?”

“Not after this afternoon.”

For the first time since the ambulance carried me away, I felt something other than fear.

Jason had planned everything carefully.

So would I.

Three days later the arrest warrants were signed.

Jason’s parents called first.

His mother sounded annoyed more than frightened.

“Claire, the police are looking for Jason. There must be some misunderstanding.”

I remained quiet.

She continued.

“He’s on vacation. Surely this can wait until we return.”

“No.”

That single word hung between us.

“Claire…”

“Your son left me without medication. He locked me inside my own house.”

Silence.

Then she sighed.

Not cried.

Not gasped.

Simply sighed.

“Jason would never do something like that.”

I looked at the empty chair across from me where Jason usually ate breakfast.

“The detectives have the security video.”

She didn’t speak again.

A few seconds later the call disconnected.

Jason never reached Paris.

Federal agents arrested him during a layover at JFK Airport before his connecting flight boarded.

Melissa was arrested outside her office less than an hour later.

News stations carried the story that evening.

My phone wouldn’t stop vibrating.

Friends I hadn’t spoken to in years called.

Coworkers sent messages.

Even distant relatives wanted to know whether I was safe.

I answered almost nobody.

There wasn’t much left to explain.

Four days after his arrest, the county jail approved Jason’s first phone call to me.

I almost declined it.

Marcus suggested otherwise.

“Every call is recorded.”

I accepted.

Jason sounded strangely relaxed.

As though he expected everything to return to normal if he chose the right words.

“Claire…”
