Clearly, she hadn’t.

I told her the amount.

Then I explained where some of the money had come from.

Her expression changed.

But what she said next told me everything I needed to know.

“Tessa, please don’t make this bigger than it needs to be. We have to think about keeping the family together.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I said, “The family is already coming apart, Diane. I’m just the last person anyone bothered to tell.”

That afternoon, I contacted an old college friend, Morgan Hale, who practiced family law.

I showed her the bank statements, the receipt, and everything else I had documented.

She reviewed the papers carefully.

Then she said, “The financial part can be addressed. But what you do about the marriage is your decision.”

I already knew my answer.

“Then let’s prepare the paperwork.”

Everyone at the Same Table

Three days later, Diane texted me.

“Come early Saturday. We need to talk as a family.”

I replied with one word.

“Yes.”

What she didn’t know was that Owen would be home from his business trip that Saturday.

For once, everyone would be sitting at the same table.

I arrived carrying a folder inside my handbag.

Diane met me near the door.

“Please don’t turn tonight into a scene,” she whispered. “Reid regrets everything. Brooke is already upset.”

I looked at her.

“Isn’t avoiding a scene what everyone has been doing for six months?”

She had no answer.

Owen arrived first.

Brooke came later with Maisie.

Reid was last.

The moment he walked in and saw his brother sitting in the living room, he stopped for barely a second.

But I noticed.

During dinner, Diane talked constantly.

Brooke barely touched her food.

Reid avoided looking at me.

Then Owen casually placed some food on his wife’s plate.

“You’ve hardly eaten, Brooke.”

She gave him a weak smile.

Reid looked up.

His expression tightened.

That tiny reaction settled something inside me.

I put down my fork.

Diane immediately looked at me.

“Tessa…”

I turned toward Owen.

“There’s something you deserve to know.”

Reid straightened.

“Tessa, don’t.”

I opened my bag.

“For almost two years, Reid has been transferring money to Brooke.”

I placed the statements on the table.

Owen picked them up.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression slowly changed.

“Why have you been giving my wife money?”

Reid finally spoke.

“Let me explain.”

“Then explain.”

Reid said Brooke had been struggling whenever Owen traveled and that he had only been trying to help.

Owen looked at his wife.

“You needed help, but you couldn’t tell me?”

Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.

I placed a photograph of the jewelry receipt beside the statements.

Owen looked at it.

Then at Brooke’s wrist.

She instinctively covered the bracelet.

That movement said more than a long explanation could have.

“Did Reid buy that for you?”

Brooke hesitated.

Then she whispered, “Yes.”

The Papers Reid Never Expected

Reid stood.

“Nothing happened the way you’re thinking.”

Owen raised one hand.

“I haven’t even told you what I’m thinking.”

Diane tried to intervene.

“Everyone needs to calm down. Reid was helping—”

Owen turned toward her.

“Mom, did you know?”

Silence.

“Did you know?”

Diane finally admitted that she had known something was wrong for months.

Owen closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, he looked exhausted.

He asked Brooke to gather Maisie’s things.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“Thank you for telling me.”

I didn’t feel victorious.

I felt sad.

After the door closed, only Diane, Reid, and I remained.

Reid sat down slowly.

Then he asked something I could hardly believe.

“Did you really have to do that in front of everyone?”

Even then, his first concern was embarrassment.

I reached into my bag again.

“There’s something else.”

I placed another set of papers in front of him.

He stared at the first page.

“What is this?”

“I’m ending our marriage.”

Diane gasped.

Reid looked up at me.

“Tessa, don’t do this.”

“I already decided.”

He started promising everything.

He would stop contacting Brooke.

He would stop sending money.

He would give me access to his phone.

He would share every password.

I listened.

Then I shook my head.

“I don’t want to become someone who checks her husband’s phone every night. I don’t want to wonder where you are every time you leave the house. I wanted a partner I could trust.”

“I made a mistake.”

I pointed toward the bank statements.

“A mistake happens once. These are nearly two years of choices.”
