Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Put Down the Serving Spoon Heavily Beside My Hand When I Refused to Welcome His Girlfriend Into Our Home—Then He Ordered Me to Cook Her Dinner, Set a Place for Her at My Table, and Move Into the Guest Room Because “She’ll Be Staying Here.” I Didn’t Argue. I Quietly Set the Table for Three and Waited for the Doorbell to Ring

Part 2 of 3

“That’s how this works, Jennifer.”

David calmly pulled out a chair.

“You may want to continue reading.”

Mark’s smile remained through page six.

Page eight.

Page ten.

Then he reached page eleven.

His hand stopped.

He read the paragraph again.

“What is this?”

I sat across from him.

“What does it say?”

“The house.”

He looked at David.

“She’s claiming the house isn’t marital property?”

“Jennifer isn’t claiming anything,” David said. “The deed and estate records establish ownership.”

Mark pushed back from the table.

“I’ve lived here for nine years.”

“Yes.”

“I renovated this place.”

David opened his case again.

“Using funds traceable to Jennifer’s inheritance.”

Mark turned toward me.

“You’ve been planning this.”

I rested my injured wrist beside my plate.

“I’ve been reading.”

The doorbell rang again.

Nobody moved.

Then the front door opened.

Ashley called from the foyer.

“Mark?”

She appeared in the dining-room doorway wearing a red cocktail dress and carrying an overnight bag.

She stopped when she saw David.

Then the papers.

Then me.

“What’s going on?”

Mark stood.

“Jennifer has lost her mind.”

Ashley looked at me.

“Maybe I should leave.”

“Actually,” I said, “you should stay.”

Her hand tightened around the suitcase handle.

“Why?”

David reached into his case.

He removed a second folder.

Ashley stared at it.

I watched her face carefully.

She didn’t know what was inside.

Mark did.

His eyes moved from the folder to me.

“Jennifer.”

It was the first time that evening he had said my name without irritation.

Almost a warning.

Almost a request.

David placed the folder beside Ashley’s untouched plate.

“North Harbor Design,” I said.

The color left her face.

Mark stepped toward me.

“Whatever you think you found—”

“Sit down.”

He stopped.

I had never spoken to him that way before.

For once, he listened.

David opened the folder.

The first page contained the vendor registration.

The second contained payment records.

The third showed the condominium address.

Ashley’s address.

She slowly lowered her overnight bag to the floor.

“Mark told me those payments were approved.”

Mark turned toward her.

“Don’t.”

I looked between them.

Then I placed my swollen wrist on the table beside the papers.

“Tomorrow morning,” I said, “we’re going to talk about what else you thought belonged to you.”

Mark stared at me across the dinner he had ordered me to cook.

For the first time that night, he wasn’t telling me where to sit.

What Ashley Knew About the Missing Money

Ashley remained standing beside the table.

Her overnight bag rested against her ankle.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

David turned one of the payment records toward her.

“Then this should be easy to explain.”

Ashley didn’t touch it.

Mark did.

He grabbed the page and scanned it.

“These were legitimate vendor payments.”

“For what?” I asked.

“Renovations.”

“Which restaurant?”

He looked at me.

“Jennifer, don’t do this.”

“Which restaurant?”

He couldn’t answer.

David placed three invoices beside the first one.

Wine storage.

Lighting consultation.

Custom furniture.

Nearly $140,000 altogether.

None of those services had been delivered.

Ashley finally sat down.

“Mark handled the financial side.”

He turned toward her.

“You approved these.”

“Because you told me to.”

Their loyalty to each other lasted less than five minutes.

I watched them argue over who had approved what while the rosemary chicken cooled between us.

Then David removed one final document.

“There’s an emergency member meeting tomorrow at nine.”

Mark stopped talking.

He looked at the notice.

Then at me.

“You can’t call a meeting without me.”

“We just did.”

“I’m the CEO.”

“For tonight,” I said.

He laughed, but there wasn’t much confidence left in it.

“You think because your grandmother gave you some money, you understand how to run my company?”

I looked at Ashley’s untouched plate.

“We’ll find out tomorrow.”

Mark stood.

“Come on, Ashley.”

She hesitated.

“Where are we going?”

He stared at her overnight bag.

“A hotel.”

I almost reminded him to use his own credit card.

I didn’t need to.

By midnight, David had already sent the required notices concerning company spending.

The Company Mark Called His

At 8:55 the next morning, I entered the conference room at Parker Hospitality.

Lisa Hernandez was already there.

So were our three minority members, outside accountant, David, and a representative from the bank that held our business credit line.

Mark arrived at nine.

Ashley followed him.

He wore a navy suit and the expression he usually saved for investors.

“Before this circus begins,” he said, “everyone should understand that Jennifer and I are going through a difficult divorce.”

Nobody answered.

Mark placed both hands on the table.

“She’s upset. She’s discovered I was seeing someone else, and now she’s trying to turn a private marriage problem into a corporate issue.”

I nodded to Lisa.

She turned on the screen.

A spreadsheet appeared.

No photographs of Mark and Ashley.

No messages between them.

No evidence of the affair.

Just numbers.

Lisa pointed to the first column.

“These are payments made to North Harbor Design over the last eighteen months.”

Mark leaned back.

“We’ve already discussed this.”

“No,” Lisa said. “You’ve explained them. We haven’t verified them.”

She moved to the next page.

Twenty-three payments.

$486,000.

The room became very quiet.

One of our minority members, Tom Reynolds, adjusted his glasses.

“Almost half a million dollars?”

Mark didn’t look at him.

“Across eighteen months.”

“For what?”

“Expansion expenses.”
