Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Secretly Took $18,000 From Our Baby Fund While I Was 39 Weeks Pregnant to Send His Mother to Hawaii—But While I Was in the Hospital Waiting to Give Birth, His Phone Lit Up With a Message From Her: ‘Did Allison Notice the Transfer?’ I Looked at Him and Asked, ‘What Else Haven’t You Told Me?’—And the Way He Reached for His Phone Made Me Check Our Account Immediately”

Part 1 of 3

The first contraction that made me stop talking came at 11:17 on a Tuesday morning.

The second thing that stopped me was the number on my phone.

$18,312.44.

That was all that remained in the savings account my husband and I had spent two years building for our daughter.

I refreshed the banking app.

Same number.

Beside me, my husband, Ryan, was opening a package of crackers from the hospital snack tray.

“Ryan.”

He looked up.

“What?”

I turned the phone toward him.

“Where is the rest of the baby money?”

His hand stopped halfway to his mouth.

That pause told me more than anything he said afterward.

We were in a maternity room at St. Catherine Medical Center outside Columbus, Ohio. I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant, wearing a hospital gown, an IV taped to my wrist, waiting for our daughter, Lily, to be born.

And almost exactly half of the money we had saved to get us through the first months of her life was gone.

We called the account BABY BUFFER.

That was actually what Ryan had named it when he created the savings category in our banking app.

We had a little over $36,000 in it three weeks earlier.

I knew because I checked every Sunday.

That money wasn’t for a nicer stroller or a designer nursery.

It was supposed to cover whatever insurance didn’t cover from the delivery, my unpaid maternity leave, childcare deposits, groceries, and enough breathing room that I wouldn’t have to return to my job before I was physically ready.

I worked in benefits administration for a regional manufacturing company. Ryan sold commercial HVAC systems.

We both contributed.

For two years, we skipped things because of that account.

Weekend trips.

A new dining table.

Replacing my ten-year-old car.

Ryan had even joked that our daughter had more savings than we did.

Now $18,000 was missing.

Ryan set the crackers down.

“I was going to tell you.”

I stared at him.

“Where did it go?”

“My mom needed some money.”

Another contraction started.

I closed my eyes and waited through it.

When it passed, I picked up my phone again.

“Eighteen thousand dollars?”

“It’s not exactly like that.”

“Then tell me exactly what it’s like.”

Ryan stood and walked toward the window.

That was something he did when he didn’t want to look at me.

“Mom has wanted to go to Hawaii basically her whole life.”

For a second, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“What?”

His mother, Diane, was sixty-three and perfectly healthy.

She owned her house.

She had retirement income.

She was not facing an emergency.

“She and Megan found a really good package,” Ryan said. “Flights, hotel, everything.”

Megan was Ryan’s younger sister.

I opened Instagram.

I didn’t even have to search.

Megan had posted twelve minutes earlier.

There she was in oversized sunglasses, holding a pink drink beside a hotel pool.

Behind her were palm trees and a strip of brilliant blue ocean.

The location tag said Waikiki Beach.

The caption read:

MOM FINALLY MADE IT 🌺

I looked at Ryan.

“We paid for that?”

“I helped.”

“How much?”

“The trip was around fifteen.”

I waited.

He rubbed his jaw.

“And I gave her some spending money.”

I looked again at the balance on my screen.

$18,312.44.

For two years, that number had gone up every month.

Now I could almost see the missing half in Megan’s photograph.

A hotel balcony.

Plane tickets.

Poolside drinks.

I locked my phone.

“You took eighteen thousand dollars from the account we’re using for my maternity leave.”

“It’s our money, Claire.”

That was the first time he said it.

Our money.

I would hear a different version later.

The Message He Didn’t Want Me to See

Ryan started explaining.

His mother had sacrificed a lot raising him.

She hadn’t traveled much.

She had always talked about Hawaii.

Megan had found a deal.

Ryan expected a large commission check before Christmas.

He intended to put the money back.

None of that answered the question I kept asking.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Finally, he stopped moving around the room.

“Because I knew you’d say no.”

I looked at him.

“So you knew I didn’t agree.”

“Claire, don’t turn it into that.”

“You knew I would say no, so you didn’t ask.”

He picked up his phone.

“You’re about to have a baby. Can we please not do this right now?”

I almost laughed.

He was right about one thing.

I was about to have a baby.

That was precisely why we had the money.

A nurse came in to check my blood pressure and ask about the contractions. Ryan became quiet and pleasant.

He helped adjust my pillow.

He asked the nurse whether I needed more ice.

When she left, he sat beside me.

“I’ll replace it.”

“When?”

“December, probably.”

It was September.

My maternity leave started that morning.

I wouldn’t receive my normal paycheck again for weeks.

I picked up my phone and opened the banking app.

Ryan sighed.

“What are you doing?”

“Looking at the transfer.”

There it was.

$18,000.

Transferred to an account ending in 4409.

The recipient was DIANE MERCER.

I took screenshots.

Ryan watched me.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you screenshotting it?”

“Because I want a record.”

He leaned back in the chair.

“You’re acting like I stole from you.”

I didn’t answer.

My phone buzzed.

It was Ryan’s phone, actually.

He had left it on the mattress near my leg when he’d gotten up.

The screen lit.

MOM.

The preview appeared underneath.

Did Claire notice the transfer?

I read it twice.

Ryan reached for the phone.

I picked it up first.

“Give me that.”

“Why is your mother asking whether I noticed?”

“Claire.”

“Unlock it.”

“No.”

“Unlock it.”

He held out his hand.

“You’re not reading my private messages.”

I handed him the phone.

“Then read them to me.”

He said nothing.

That silence lasted maybe five seconds.

It felt much longer.

Then my own phone rang.

Megan.

Ryan looked at the screen.

“Don’t answer that.”

So I answered it.

“Hey.”

Megan sounded strange.

Not cheerful like someone calling from Hawaii.

“Claire, are you at the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Is Ryan there?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

Then Megan said quietly:

“You need to check the baby account again.”

Ryan stood.

“Megan, stay out of this.”

She heard him.

“Did you tell her?”

“Tell me what?” I asked.

Megan lowered her voice.

“There’s another transfer.”

I opened the account.

At first I didn’t see anything.

Then I tapped Pending Activity.

My mouth went dry.

$18,312.44.

Pending transfer.

The exact remaining balance.

Recipient: DIANE MERCER.

If it cleared, our BABY BUFFER would have contained essentially nothing.

I looked at Ryan.

He didn’t deny it.

“It Was Supposed to Make Things More Realistic”

I called the bank from my hospital bed.

Ryan kept telling me not to overreact.

I put the call on speaker while I worked through the automated menu.
