Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Shouted, ‘I’ll Come Back for You!’ Before Climbing Out of Our Sinking SUV, Leaving Me Trapped by a Seat Belt That Wouldn’t Release and My Disabled Brother Stranded Behind Me—But When I Looked Through the Flooded Window, I Saw Him Embrace My Pregnant Half Sister on the Riverbank, and Then I Heard My Brother Whisper, ‘Rosalind, Don’t Let Them See Us Come Up’”

Part 1 of 3

The Wire Beneath My Seat

The first thing I realized was that my seat belt was not jammed.

Someone had tied it down.

Our SUV had already tipped onto its passenger side and was sinking into the Patapsco River when I shoved my hand between my hip and the seat.

My fingers touched thin metal wire.

It had been looped around the belt and fastened to the steel frame underneath me.

“Garrett!”

Water rushed through the cracked passenger window.

My husband twisted around from the driver’s seat.

“My belt won’t release!”

I pulled the buckle again.

Nothing.

“There’s wire around it!”

Behind me, my younger brother Tobias was strapped into his wheelchair in the rear section of the SUV.

Tobias had used that chair for fifteen years, ever since the crash that killed our parents.

The water was already climbing around his legs.

“Garrett, help Tobias!”

Garrett looked at me.

Then he released his own belt.

Click.

I still remember that sound.

“Garrett?”

He kicked the driver’s window until the damaged glass gave way.

Then he pulled himself through.

“What are you doing?”

He disappeared into the black water.

For one second, I thought he was swimming around to help me.

Instead, he moved toward shore.

Without us.

“Garrett!”

The SUV dropped lower.

Water reached my chest.

I twisted toward the back.

“Tobias!”

No answer.

Then headlights swept across the riverbank.

Garrett was climbing onto the concrete embankment.

Someone was waiting for him.

A woman in a red coat stood beneath an umbrella.

Penelope.

My half sister.

One hand rested over her pregnant stomach.

For weeks, she had refused to tell anyone who the father was.

Garrett stumbled toward her.

Penelope dropped the umbrella.

My husband wrapped both arms around her.

Neither of them called for help.

Neither ran toward the road.

They simply watched the SUV sink.

I stopped screaming.

Behind me, something moved.

At first I thought Tobias had fallen out of his wheelchair.

Then another flash of light crossed the vehicle.

My brother was standing.

My Brother Took Three Steps

Tobias braced one hand against the roof.

His legs shook, but they held him.

He took one step toward me.

Then another.

“Don’t scream.”

I stared at him.

“Tobias?”

He pulled a small cutting tool from beneath his sweatshirt.

“Hold still.”

“You’re standing.”

“Rosalind, hold still.”

The water reached my shoulders.

He crouched and cut through the wire beneath my seat.

The belt snapped loose.

I pulled free.

Before I could swim toward the broken window, Tobias grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t surface beside the SUV.”

“Why?”

“Garrett has to think we died.”

The vehicle shifted sharply.

There was no time to argue.

We pushed through the opening and entered the freezing river.

Every instinct told me to swim straight upward.

Tobias pulled me sideways instead.

We moved toward an old wooden pier farther downstream.

By the time we surfaced beneath it, my lungs felt like they were tearing apart.

I grabbed one of the pilings.

For several seconds, I could only stare at Tobias’s legs moving beneath the water.

“You can walk.”

He wiped water from his face.

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

He looked toward the road.

Garrett and Penelope were gone.

“Years.”

I almost lost my grip.

“Years?”

“Keep your voice down.”

“You let me believe you were paralyzed?”

His face tightened.

“I started getting movement back about nine years ago.”

Nine years.

I thought of the ramps we installed.

The modified vans.

The nights I drove across Baltimore because he needed help.

“Why?”

Tobias looked at me.

“Because Mom and Dad’s crash wasn’t an accident.”

I said nothing.

Our parents had died fifteen years earlier when their car went through a barrier near the harbor.

Police called it mechanical failure.

Tobias had never believed that.

“What does that have to do with you pretending you couldn’t walk?”

“People talk differently around someone in a wheelchair.”

That silenced me.

Garrett had done exactly that.

His father, Montgomery, too.

They discussed business around Tobias as though he were furniture.

Tobias pulled a waterproof phone pouch from beneath his shirt.

“I have recordings.”

“Of Garrett?”

He nodded.

“And enough to explain why he married you.”

Garrett Had Planned the River

We reached an unused maintenance room near one of Harbor Bell’s old docks.

Tobias had hidden dry clothes and supplies there.

I changed into a sweatshirt and sat across from him.

Harbor Bell Shipworks had belonged to our family for three generations.

We repaired commercial boats and controlled several valuable pieces of Baltimore waterfront property.

I owned twenty-five percent of the company.

More important, my shares carried the deciding vote on any sale involving our port land.

Without my approval, the most valuable parcels could not be sold.

Tobias placed his phone on the table.

“Montgomery wanted those docks fifteen years ago.”

“For storage.”

“That was the excuse.”

According to Tobias, our father had discovered Montgomery wanted to use the private harbor access for illegal cargo.

Dad refused.

Soon after, our parents died.

“You think Montgomery caused the crash?”

“I think he paid for it.”

Then Tobias pressed play.

Garrett’s voice filled the room.

“Once the vehicle goes in, she won’t be able to release it.”

Another man spoke too quietly to hear.

Garrett answered.

“I fixed the belt. She can pull that latch all night. It isn’t opening.”

My hands went cold again.

“When was this recorded?”

“Two nights ago.”

I stood.

Then sat again.

“Keep playing.”

Garrett talked about my voting shares.

A power of attorney.

The waterfront property.

His father’s debts.

Then he said:
