Part 2 of 3

My father understood immediately.

“You want him there.”

“Yes.”

For years, Bryce had measured people by status.

Tonight, I wanted him to discover how badly he had miscalculated mine.

The Agreement Bryce Thought Would Leave Me With Nothing

When I came downstairs carrying two small suitcases, Bryce was waiting in the living room.

Corinne stood beside him.

On the table was a folder.

“Perfect timing,” Bryce said. “My attorney prepared this.”

I opened it.

It was a separation proposal.

Bryce intended to keep the house, most of the shared assets, and control over nearly everything connected to his business.

Then I reached the parenting section.

I looked up.

“You want Tessa to stay here tonight?”

Bryce nodded.

“Corinne planned for her to appear with us at the gala reception. After tonight, we can discuss arrangements.”

I almost laughed.

“You want our daughter to stand beside the woman she is afraid of because it will look good in photographs?”

“It’s one evening, Laurel.”

Corinne rolled her eyes.

“She’ll survive a few pictures.”

I looked at her.

“Tessa isn’t a decoration.”

Bryce tapped the papers impatiently.

“Just sign them.”

So I did.

He looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Corinne smiled.

“Where are you planning to go without Bryce paying your bills?”

I closed the folder.

“Somewhere I should have returned to years ago.”

Bryce laughed.

“And where exactly is that?”

I took Tessa’s hand.

“Home.”

The First Cracks in His Perfect World

By five that afternoon, Bryce had called me nine times.

I ignored every call.

One of his lenders had suddenly requested updated financial records.

A planned investment had been delayed.

Two executives who had previously shown interest in partnering with Pembroke Commercial stopped returning his messages.

Nothing illegal or improper had happened.

My father had simply stopped quietly opening doors.

That was the secret Bryce never knew.

During the early years of our marriage, I had asked my father for help several times without telling Bryce.

A difficult financing package had found a guarantor.

An introduction had led to Bryce’s first major commercial project.

A stalled development suddenly received attention from investors.

Bryce believed his charm and business instincts had created everything.

I let him believe it because I wanted his confidence to be real.

Instead, success made him increasingly certain that everyone around him was replaceable.

Including me.

The Gala He Thought Would Save Him

The Hawthorne Grand glittered beneath the Manhattan lights that evening.

Bryce arrived with Corinne shortly before eight.

He wore a black tuxedo and the confidence of a man who still believed he could talk his way out of anything.

Corinne wore another expensive gown, this one deep burgundy.

They expected to meet Conrad Ashbourne.

They expected to impress him.

They did not expect me.

Tessa and I arrived several minutes later.

I wore a simple sapphire-blue gown with my grandmother’s small diamond earrings.

Tessa wore an ivory dress and a soft blue coat.

The moment Bryce saw us, his expression changed.

“What are you doing here?”

“Attending the gala.”

Corinne stepped closer.

“You were supposed to come here and apologize.”

“For what?”

“For what happened this afternoon.”

I looked at Tessa.

She immediately moved closer to me.

Bryce lowered his voice.

“Laurel, don’t embarrass me tonight. Conrad Ashbourne is here. This meeting could change everything for my company.”

I almost smiled.

“I know.”

“Then apologize to Corinne and leave.”

Tessa whispered:

“Mommy, I don’t want to go near her.”

I bent slightly.

“You don’t have to.”

Bryce heard me.

“Stop encouraging this behavior.”

Before I could respond, the hotel’s event director approached.

Bryce immediately pointed toward me.

“I believe there’s been a misunderstanding. My wife isn’t on the guest list.”

The director looked confused.

Then he smiled at me.

“Ms. Ashbourne, your father has been asking when you would arrive.”

Bryce stopped breathing for a moment.

“What did he call you?”

I took Tessa’s hand.

“Come on, sweetheart. Grandpa is waiting.”

“Grandpa, That’s the Woman Who Scared Me”

The ballroom was filled with hundreds of guests.

Bryce followed us inside.

“Laurel!”

I kept walking.

Then the orchestra quieted.

At the opposite end of the ballroom, my father entered through a set of tall doors.

Conrad Ashbourne was seventy-three, silver-haired, composed, and still capable of making a crowded room fall silent simply by entering it.

Tessa had never met him in person.

But she knew his face.

I had shown her photographs when Bryce was away.

She had asked about him many times.

The moment she saw him, her eyes widened.

Then she released my hand.

“Grandpa!”

She ran.

My father immediately bent down and opened his arms.

Tessa rushed into them.

For several seconds, he simply held his granddaughter.
