Part 3 of 3

“Not yet.”

I looked toward Caleb.

His expression changed for barely a second.

Detective Price noticed too.

The Man in the Back Row

Another old security image appeared on the monitor.

It had been captured three years earlier, shortly before my father unexpectedly passed away following what doctors believed was a cardiac episode.

At 11:42 p.m., Dad entered the detached garage.

Thirty-one minutes later, another person appeared.

Caleb.

I felt Rachel’s hand close around mine.

Caleb had always told me he had been away on business that evening.

Detective Price explained that the original recording had been partially damaged, which was why it had never drawn attention years earlier.

Then he said authorities were now reviewing the circumstances surrounding my father’s final evening.

Caleb’s phone photographs contained another page from the envelope.

Dad had written one sentence across it.

“If Nora ever learns the full truth, Caleb knows where the trail begins.”

Caleb suddenly pushed back from the table.

“My father-in-law hated me!”

The prosecutor stared at him.

“No one said this hearing was about what happened to your father-in-law.”

Caleb froze.

Beside him, even Diane turned.

For the first time since I had known her, she did not look angry.

She looked frightened.

The judge called a recess.

I carried Emma into the hallway because my legs had begun to feel unsteady.

Rachel followed me.

“Dad knew Caleb was hiding something.”

“It certainly appears that way.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Rachel looked toward the courthouse windows.

“Maybe because he wanted proof before frightening you.”

Then I remembered something.

One of the last strange conversations Dad and I ever had.

He had asked whether Caleb ever handled his heart medication when we visited.

I had laughed at him.

Dad had not laughed back.

Before I could explain the memory to Rachel, Detective Price approached.

“Nora, did your father take prescription medication for his heart?”

“Yes.”

“Where did he keep it?”

“Usually in the bathroom cabinet. Why?”

Price exchanged a look with Rachel.

Authorities had reviewed preserved medical material from my father’s old file.

There was an irregularity.

His medication might not have been what doctors believed it was.

Investigators were still waiting for confirmation, but they now had reason to question whether Dad’s cardiac episode had been entirely natural.

I looked through the courtroom doors toward Caleb.

Then Diane noticed me.

Our eyes met.

And something unexpected happened.

She shook her head.

Not angrily.

Desperately.

Then she silently mouthed two words.

Not Caleb.

I stared at her.

She looked past me toward the rear of the courtroom.

A silver-haired man in a gray suit sat alone in the back row.

Something about him felt familiar.

Then I remembered seeing him at Dad’s memorial service.

And once, years earlier, leaving Dad’s study.

Rachel followed my gaze.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Nora…”

“Who is that?”

Before she answered, the man realized we were watching him.

He stood.

Detective Price turned.

The stranger immediately headed for the exit.

Rachel whispered his name.

“Martin Crowe.”

Price started after him.

I grabbed Rachel’s sleeve.

“Who is Martin Crowe?”

She looked at me.

“Your father’s former business partner.”

She paused.

“And Caleb’s largest private creditor.”

Suddenly the story shifted again.

Caleb needed my house.

Diane had helped him pressure me.

But perhaps someone else had been connecting Caleb, my father, and the property long before I understood any of it.

Martin disappeared into the courthouse parking structure before officers reached him.

But he left something behind.

On the chair where he had been sitting was a folded sheet of paper with my name written across the front.

Detective Price opened it carefully.

Inside was a photocopy of one page from a blue ledger.

Three names appeared beneath a series of financial transfers.

Martin Crowe.

Diane Whitfield.

Caleb Whitfield.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from my father.

“Nora must not discover what is beneath the house until Crowe is in custody.”

I stopped moving.

Detective Price looked at me.

“Beneath the house?”

And suddenly I remembered.

Behind the wine cellar in the basement was an old steel door Dad had always kept locked.

He told me it led to an abandoned utility passage from the original estate.

I had never once seen him open it.

Before I could explain, Detective Price’s phone rang.

He listened for less than thirty seconds.

Then his entire expression changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

He lowered the phone.

“Officers are at your house.”

My grip tightened around Emma.

“And?”

“The steel door behind the wine cellar is open.”

Rachel turned toward me.

Price continued.

“Whoever opened it appears to have left only minutes before officers arrived.”

I could hear my heartbeat.

Because my father had once shown only one other person where he kept the key to that door.

Me.

And I had not seen that key since the evening everything in my kitchen changed.
