My Mother-in-Law Arrived Three Days After We Got the Keys to the House We Spent Seven Years Building—with My Brother-in-Law, His Wife, and a Moving Truck. She Claimed the First Floor for Herself, Handed the Second to Her Favorite Son, and Told Us We Could Stay Upstairs and Keep Paying Every Bill. Then We Overheard What She Planned to Do So We Could Never Make Them Leave…

Part 2 of 3

I asked where the original closing folder was.

He reminded me that I had put it in the fireproof cabinet in my office.

I moved it that night.

I also moved the construction invoices, loan paperwork and receipts my parents had kept.

Eric watched me place everything inside a locked file box.

“You think Mom would actually touch our papers?”

I closed the lid.

“I think your mother brought a moving truck to our house without asking.”

He didn’t argue.

What We Heard From the Stairs

The next night, Eric and I came home later than expected.

Susan, Gary, Kevin and Ashley were in the kitchen.

They didn’t hear us enter.

Eric put one finger to his lips when he heard his mother’s voice.

“The important thing is making it permanent.”

Kevin said something I couldn’t hear.

Then Susan spoke again.

“If the second floor is legally yours, they can’t change their minds later.”

Eric stopped moving.

I looked at him.

Susan continued.

“Alejandro—”

She caught herself and laughed softly before using the nickname she’d called Eric since childhood.

“Eric will come around. He always does.”

Kevin lowered his voice.

“Megan won’t.”

“Then don’t involve Megan until it’s done.”

Eric walked into the kitchen.

Nobody spoke.

Susan was holding a glass of iced tea.

Kevin was sitting at our island.

Ashley looked down at her phone.

Eric pulled out the chair across from his brother and sat down.

“Done with what?”

Susan recovered quickly.

“We were discussing possibilities.”

“What possibilities?”

“For the house.”

“My house.”

There was something different in his voice.

Susan heard it too.

“Eric.”

“You said you wanted to put the second floor in Kevin’s name.”

Gary looked at his wife.

“Susan?”

She set down her glass.

“Eventually. Maybe. It would give your brother security.”

Eric nodded once.

“No.”

Susan stared at him.

“Don’t answer emotionally.”

“No.”

“He’s your brother.”

“No.”

Kevin stood up.

“You don’t have to talk to Mom like that.”

Eric looked at him.

“And you don’t get part of my house because Mom decided you should have it.”

Susan’s face tightened.

“After everything this family has done for you—”

Eric pushed his chair back.

“What did you do?”

The room went quiet.

Susan opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Eric stood.

“I’m asking.”

Gary looked at the floor.

Eric pointed toward the living room.

Toward the photograph of my parents standing inside the unfinished frame of the house.

“Mike spent weekends here. Linda sold jewelry to help us cover overruns. They loaned us twenty-eight thousand dollars.”

Susan looked at me.

“So this is Megan’s family against ours now?”

Eric shook his head.

“No. This is about who showed up.”

Then he looked at Kevin.

“You have forty-eight hours to find somewhere else.”

Kevin’s face changed.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

Susan stood.

“Then your father and I are staying.”

Eric looked at her.

“No.”

That was the first time in fourteen years I had known him that I heard my husband tell his mother no without adding an explanation afterward.

The Papers She Couldn’t Find

The next morning, the drawer in my office was open.

I knew I had closed it.

Nothing valuable was kept there.

Just pens, envelopes, printer paper and old tax folders.

But two cabinet doors underneath my desk were open too.

Susan was in the kitchen.

“Were you in my office?”

She kept spreading cream cheese on a bagel.

“I needed a pen.”

“There are pens in the kitchen.”

“I didn’t see one.”

I watched her put the knife down.

“What were you looking for?”

She turned toward me.

“Nothing.”

“The deed?”

Her eyes shifted for maybe half a second.

That was enough.

Eric walked in behind me.

I didn’t explain.

I simply said:

“Your mother was searching my office.”

Susan immediately straightened.

“I was not searching anything.”

Eric looked at the open office door.

Then at her.

“Mom, where are your boxes?”

“Excuse me?”

“Start packing.”

She stared at him.

“Your aunt and uncle are coming Sunday. Your cousins too. We’re going to sit down like adults and resolve this.”

Eric picked up his car keys.

“There is nothing to resolve.”

But Susan had already sent the invitations.

And Sunday afternoon, eleven relatives showed up at our house.

She had told them we were having a family dinner.

What she had actually arranged was an intervention.

“Give Him the Second Floor”

I knew what was happening the moment I saw Kevin sitting beside Susan at the dining table.

Ashley sat next to him.

Gary barely touched his food.

My parents weren’t there.

Susan hadn’t invited them.

After dinner, Susan folded her napkin.

“Since everyone is together, we should clear up this misunderstanding.”

Eric leaned back.

“There isn’t a misunderstanding.”

One of his aunts looked uncomfortable.

Susan continued anyway.

“Eric and Megan have been blessed with more space than they need. Kevin and Ashley are starting a family.”

Ashley wasn’t pregnant.

Apparently, that didn’t matter.

“This house has enough room for everyone.”

I looked around the table.

Nobody spoke.

Then Kevin did.

“I think the simplest solution is to transfer the second floor to me.”

There it was.

Not borrow.

Not use.

Transfer.

Eric looked at his brother.

“Why?”

Kevin frowned.

“Because then Ashley and I would have stability.”

“Buy a house.”
