Part 3 of 3

“Give it back.”

Linda held it behind her.

Tyler stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Something in his voice finally made her hand it over.

I checked the screen.

Then Tyler noticed the notebook again.

“Let me see the pages about Dad.”

We sat on the basement floor while Linda stood near the stairs.

Tyler read silently.

His finger stopped on one entry.

Mark thinks taking Tyler away will solve everything.

Then another.

He doesn’t understand what I’m willing to do to keep my family together.

Tyler turned several pages.

His face changed.

“What’s this?”

I leaned closer.

There was an entry dated two days before Mark died.

He’ll be driving back from Dayton Thursday night.

Tyler stared at it.

Linda moved toward us.

“Give me that.”

Tyler stood.

“Why did you write this?”

“Because your father told me his schedule.”

“You told me you didn’t know where he was that night.”

Linda blinked.

“It was fifteen years ago.”

“You said the police called you and that’s how you found out he’d gone to Dayton.”

“I don’t remember every conversation.”

Tyler held the notebook against his chest.

“Did Dad’s accident have anything to do with you?”

Linda’s face went still.

“Your father was taking you away from me.”

Tyler waited.

So did I.

She never answered his question.

Instead she said:

“Everything I did was to keep this family together.”

Tyler looked at me.

“We’re leaving.”

He grabbed the shoebox of letters.

I put the notebook into my tote bag and took several photo albums from the shelf.

Linda stepped in front of the basement stairs.

“Those belong to me.”

“Then you can explain that to the police,” Tyler said.

I Called 911 Without Telling Her

We made it upstairs to the kitchen.

Linda followed us.

She was no longer pretending to be sick or confused.

She locked the back door.

“Put everything down.”

Tyler positioned himself between us.

“Move away from the door, Mom.”

“You’re not taking private family papers to strangers.”

While they argued, I slipped my phone from my pocket.

I tapped the emergency call.

Then I lowered the phone into my coat pocket without ending the call.

“Megan caused this,” Linda said. “Before her, you listened to me.”

“Before Megan, I was afraid of you.”

Linda stared at him.

“After everything I’ve done?”

Tyler held up the notebook.

“What did you do to Dad?”

Linda’s jaw tightened.

“He tried to take you.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She moved closer.

“You don’t know what happens when people try to tear a family apart.”

Tyler backed toward me.

“We’re leaving.”

Linda grabbed the tote bag.

I held on.

Letters spilled across the kitchen floor.

One landed beside Linda’s shoe.

She looked down.

Tyler picked it up.

It was addressed to Mark.

He unfolded it.

Linda reached for it.

“Don’t.”

Tyler stepped back.

Then we heard knocking.

Three hard knocks at the front door.

“Columbus Police.”

Linda froze.

She looked at me.

I pulled the phone from my pocket.

The call was still connected.

This Time, Linda Couldn’t Control the Story

Linda changed the second the officers entered.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her voice became shaky.

“My son and his wife are taking my belongings. He’s been very upset.”

One officer looked at Tyler.

The other looked at me.

“Who called 911?”

“I did.”

Linda turned toward me.

“She’s lying.”

The officer glanced at my phone.

“Ma’am, dispatch has been listening for several minutes.”

Linda said nothing.

We showed them the notebook, the letters and the photographs.

I also showed them the picture I’d taken in the laundry room.

Tyler explained the sheet.

The deed.

The threat.

Then he told them about Mark.

Nobody put Linda in handcuffs that afternoon.

Real life wasn’t that fast.

But the officers separated us, documented what we’d brought out of the basement, and took statements.

Tyler also gave them the information he remembered about his father’s crash.

Over the following weeks, a detective contacted him.

Mark’s old crash file was pulled for review after Tyler provided the journal entries and letters.

The detective made no promises.

He only said there were questions worth asking.

Tyler also gave him the names of several people Linda had driven out of his life.

For the first time, he called Aunt Denise himself.

She answered.

They talked for almost two hours.

Three Months Later

Tyler and I moved into a one-bedroom apartment north of Columbus.

It wasn’t impressive.

Our dining table came from Facebook Marketplace, and one kitchen cabinet wouldn’t close unless you lifted the door slightly.

But Linda didn’t have a key.

Tyler started seeing a therapist.

I made one thing clear: understanding why he’d been afraid of his mother didn’t erase what happened on our wedding night.

He agreed.

We weren’t magically fine.

But he stopped hiding things.

One Saturday morning, I pulled clean laundry from the dryer.

At the bottom was a new white sheet.

For a second, I just held it.

Tyler came into the bedroom and took the other end.

“Megan?”

“Yeah?”

He looked at the sheet between us.

“I’m sorry I left you downstairs that night.”

I didn’t tell him it was okay.

It wasn’t.

“You should’ve told me.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

We stretched the clean white sheet across our own bed, and this time, there was nothing on it that either of us needed to hide.
