Moral Stories Silent Heroes

My Mother-in-Law Served Everyone Steak and Seafood—Then Put an Empty Plate in Front of Me and Said, “There’s Nothing Left for You”

Part 2 of 3

“Judith, you told me my budget had run out.”

She said nothing.

I continued.

“It turns out you were right.”

Then I ended the call.

Twenty minutes later, Gavin arrived at my office.

His face was red.

“What did you do?”

I closed the conference room door behind us.

“I stopped paying expenses that were never mine.”

“Mom is panicking.”

“Then maybe you should help her.”

“You know I can’t cover that mortgage.”

I folded my arms.

“Then why does she live in a house that requires my income?”

He stared at me.

“We’re married. My family is your family.”

“Interesting. Nobody remembered that Saturday night.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“This is ridiculous. It was one dinner.”

“No, Gavin. The dinner was simply the first time I stopped pretending.”

The Folder Nathan Put on My Desk

I thought ending the payments would be the biggest financial decision I made that week.

I was wrong.

On Tuesday afternoon, Nathan entered my office carrying a thick gray folder.

He shut the door.

“Audrey, I found something.”

The expression on his face made my stomach tighten.

He placed several account statements in front of me.

Over the previous sixteen months, a company credit line had been used repeatedly for charges I did not recognize.

At first, the amounts were small.

$400.

$750.

$1,200.

Then they increased.

Hotel charges.

Furniture.

Restaurant bills.

Cash transfers.

Two payments to an online brokerage platform.

The total was more than $46,000.

I stared at Nathan.

“Who authorized these?”

He slid another sheet toward me.

The card belonged to Gavin.

I had given him access nearly two years earlier when he occasionally helped coordinate company events.

I had completely forgotten the account was still active.

“There’s more,” Nathan said.

Several transfers had been sent from Gavin’s card into an account associated with a small consulting company.

The company belonged to Preston’s wife, Camille.

The same woman Judith had celebrated at Saturday’s dinner.

The same woman everyone described as financially brilliant.

I leaned back in my chair.

“So Camille’s successful investment business…”

Nathan shook his head.

“From what I can see, a significant amount of the money appears to have originated from your company credit line.”

My hands went cold.

Suddenly the expensive dinner made perfect sense.

Camille had not been funding a luxurious lifestyle through successful investments.

Part of it had been funded by me.

Without my knowledge.

The Conversation That Ended My Marriage

That evening, I asked Gavin to come home.

When he arrived, a folder was waiting on the dining table.

He saw it and immediately stopped walking.

That reaction told me almost everything.

I pointed to the chair across from me.

“Sit down.”

He remained standing.

“Audrey, whatever Nathan told you—”

“So you already know what this is about.”

His face changed.

I opened the folder.

“Forty-six thousand dollars, Gavin.”

He looked away.

“I was going to replace it.”

I almost laughed.

“With what?”

“Camille said her investment would start producing returns.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“You used my company credit line to finance your sister-in-law’s business?”

“It wasn’t supposed to be permanent.”

“Did you ask me?”

He said nothing.

“Did you tell me?”

Still nothing.

Then came the sentence that finally destroyed whatever remained of my trust.

“I knew you would say no.”

I nodded slowly.

“Exactly. Which means you understood you did not have my permission.”

He sat down and covered his face.

“I was trying to help my family.”

“By taking from your wife?”

“I thought once Camille made the money back, none of this would matter.”

I pushed another document across the table.

He looked down.

His face went pale.

It was a separation agreement drafted earlier that afternoon by my attorney, Rebecca Haines.

“Audrey…”

“I want you to move out tonight.”

His eyes widened.

“You’re ending our marriage over money?”

I shook my head.

“I’m ending our marriage because you watched your family disrespect me while quietly using my money to support them. The money is evidence. The betrayal is the problem.”

He began talking quickly.

Promises.

Excuses.

Apologies.

Plans to fix everything.

I listened until he finished.

Then I said, “The saddest part is that you only became afraid of losing me after you lost access to what I provided.”

He had no answer.

The Favorite Daughter-in-Law’s Secret

Over the next two weeks, the situation inside Gavin’s family changed rapidly.

Without my payments, Judith struggled to cover her household expenses.
