Part 2 of 3

One of her own attorneys picked up the emails.

His face changed as he read them.

“Elaine, did you authorize these communications?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation said more than an answer could.

Curtis stepped forward.

“Your father wanted us to explore options.”

I turned toward him.

“Then show me his authorization.”

Nobody moved.

Graham opened another folder.

“Her father discovered the attempted transaction and stopped it.”

My stomach tightened.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

Then Graham explained why Dad had hired him.

After discovering the attempted property transaction, Dad reviewed his finances.

What he found worried him enough to begin documenting everything.

The Revoked Authorization

Several years earlier, while recovering from a medical procedure, Dad had temporarily given my mother limited authority to handle certain financial matters.

He later revoked that authority.

But according to Graham, copies of the old paperwork continued appearing in transactions.

My mother immediately objected.

“He told me I could still help with finances.”

Graham remained calm.

“There is no current document supporting that claim.”

I asked the only question that mattered.

“How much money are we talking about?”

Graham looked down at his notes.

“Approximately $2.6 million in transactions require explanation.”

Nolan stood so quickly his chair nearly tipped.

“Two point six million?”

My mother snapped,

“It was family money.”

Graham corrected her.

“Some of it came from corporate accounts.”

Then he looked toward Curtis.

“Including approximately five hundred and eighty thousand dollars transferred to a consulting company associated with you.”

Curtis stopped moving.

Nolan stared at him.

“You told me Dad approved the money for my restaurant expansion.”

Nobody answered.

Nolan turned toward our mother.

“Mom?”

She looked away.

His voice became quieter.

“Did Dad actually approve my funding?”

Again, silence.

For the first time that evening, my brother stopped looking arrogant.

He looked frightened.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

And strangely, I believed him.

My Father’s Hidden Cabinet

Graham reached into his pocket and placed a small brass key in front of me.

I recognized it.

It belonged to the lower filing cabinet in Dad’s downtown office.

My mother reacted immediately.

“That cabinet was already emptied.”

Graham looked at her.

“The cabinet you emptied was.”

Her face changed.

Dad had spent forty years building properties.

He understood hidden spaces better than anyone.

Graham opened his laptop.

A live video call was already waiting.

His associate stood inside Dad’s office beside the old drafting table.

She opened the bottom drawer, removed what looked like an ordinary wooden panel, and revealed a narrow compartment underneath.

Inside were three handwritten ledgers.

A flash drive.

A sealed pouch.

And a digital recorder.

My mother whispered,

“No.”

Everyone heard her.

The first ledger contained dates, account numbers, initials, and notes in Dad’s handwriting.

One entry documented a transfer my mother requested and Dad refused.

Another referenced a questionable invoice connected to Curtis.

Another mentioned Nolan’s restaurant and clearly stated that Dad had refused additional funding until he saw audited projections.

Nolan covered his mouth.

The sealed pouch contained something even more important.

A notarized statement written by my father documenting his concerns about the handling of his finances.

Dad hadn’t simply suspected something was wrong.

He had created a record.

The Recording Nobody Expected

There was one more envelope.

Across the front Dad had written:

FOR ELAINE — ONLY IF SHE DENIES EVERYTHING.

My mother immediately said,

“Don’t open that.”

Graham did.

Inside was a memory card.

Seconds later, Dad’s tired but unmistakable voice filled the room.

“Elaine, did you authorize that transfer?”

My mother’s recorded voice answered.

“It was temporary.”

“I told you not to move that money.”

“Nolan needed help.”

Then Curtis could be heard speaking.

“Don’t turn this into something bigger than it is.”

Dad responded calmly.

“You used paperwork that was no longer valid.”

Nobody moved when the recording stopped.

Graham said there were more than forty minutes of recorded conversations.

My mother sat down.

For the first time that night, I understood something that hurt more than the money.

Dad had been worried inside his own home.

The Real Reason They Needed Dad’s Money

The documents revealed another layer.

Curtis had made several unsuccessful investments.

The losses were substantial.

My mother had been trying to help him recover.

The Massachusetts house could have covered much of it.

When Dad refused to sell, they explored other options.

Some of the messages even discussed what could happen if Dad were eventually considered unable to manage his own financial affairs.

My mother had spent months telling relatives that Dad was becoming forgetful.

Now I understood why.

I looked at her.

“You were building a story around him.”

“I was protecting this family.”
