Happy Soul Moral Stories

My parents said they were too broke to replace their leaking roof, so I spent three blistering July days tearing off rotten shingles for free while they came home from church, sat in lawn chairs drinking sweet tea, filmed me limping across the roof, and laughed that I was “too sensitive.” I kept hammering anyway—until I stepped into their air-conditioned kitchen, noticed the first-class Europe itinerary already paid in full beside Dad’s open Bible, and quietly started putting my tools away.

Part 1 of 3

The nail gun slipped from my hand when I heard my mother laughing.

I was balanced on the steepest section of my parents’ roof, sweat running into my eyes, replacing another row of rotted plywood. My knees ached from three straight days on shingles hot enough to burn through my work pants.

Below me, my parents sat comfortably on the front porch with iced tea.

My father held his phone up toward me.

“Walk like her again,” he said.

My mother stood, bent her knees, exaggerated the stiff way I had been climbing the ladder that morning, and burst into laughter.

My father laughed too.

Then he turned the camera toward himself.

“Our daughter says roofing is easy. Doesn’t look easy now.”

They both laughed again.

A minute later my father’s phone chimed.

Another family group message.

Another video.

Another joke.

The same Bible they’d carried home from church less than an hour earlier sat open on the coffee table beside the living room window.

I could see it from where I stood.

The pages moved gently under the air conditioner blowing through the open screen door.

I looked at the Bible.

Then at my parents.

Then back at the roof beneath my boots.

I drove another nail into the plywood.

The Roof I Thought They Couldn’t Afford

Three weeks earlier my father had called.

“The roof is finally giving out.”

Rain had started leaking into their guest bedroom.

“We got three estimates,” he said. “They’re all over twenty thousand dollars. We just don’t have that kind of money anymore.”

I had worked construction before engineering school.

Roofing had paid my tuition.

Some of my classmates waited tables.

I spent summers hauling bundles of shingles up ladders in hundred-degree heat.

It wasn’t glamorous work.

It was honest work.

My father used to tell everyone at church the same thing.

“God gave Audrey willing hands. Hard work is worship.”

I believed him.

I still did.

At least then.

So I told him I would do it myself.

I bought the materials at contractor pricing.

I rented the dumpster.

I replaced the damaged decking instead of covering it.

I even paid for upgraded architectural shingles because they would last another thirty years.

My parents thanked me over Sunday dinner.

My mother reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

“You’ve always been our greatest blessing.”

Looking back, I realized they said that every time they needed something.

Sunday’s Sermon

Every Sunday our family attended Grace Fellowship Church.

The routine never changed.

Coffee in the lobby.

Greeting the same couples.

My father shaking hands with nearly everyone.

That morning Pastor Allen preached about serving others without expecting recognition.

My father nodded through nearly every sentence.

During the closing prayer he rested his hand on my shoulder.

“Lord, thank You for giving Audrey such generous hands.”

Several church members smiled at me afterward.

One elderly woman whispered,

“Your parents are so proud of you.”

I smiled politely.

An hour later my father was recording videos of me limping across a roof for entertainment.

Something Didn’t Feel Right

By the third afternoon my hands had split open beneath my gloves.

I climbed down for water.

My mother handed me a paper towel.

Not bandages.

Not antiseptic.

Just a paper towel.

“Don’t drip blood on the new shingles,” she said.

She laughed as though it were harmless.

I laughed once too.

Mostly because I didn’t know what else to do.

That evening I walked inside looking for another bottle of water.

My parents were outside discussing dinner reservations.

Their laptop sat open on the kitchen island.

I wasn’t trying to snoop.

The screen lit up when I reached for my water bottle.

An email notification appeared.

European Horizons Luxury Travel

Normally I would’ve ignored it.

Instead one sentence caught my eye.

Final confirmation for your First-Class flights to Rome.

I frowned.

Rome?

I clicked.

The reservation opened automatically.

Two first-class airline tickets.

Three luxury hotels.

Private guided tours.

Wine tastings.

A river cruise.

Nearly three weeks overseas.

Total paid in full.

I checked the travel dates.

Two weeks after I finished replacing the roof.

My chest tightened.

Dad had said they couldn’t afford repairs.

They had already paid nearly thirty thousand dollars for a European vacation.

“We’ve Been Praying For This”

I closed the laptop just before they came inside.

That night I barely slept.

The next morning I decided not to accuse anyone.

I wanted to hear them explain it.

While my father loaded another bundle of shingles onto the lift, I asked quietly,

“When did you decide to visit Europe?”

Neither of them looked surprised.

My mother smiled.

“Oh, we’ve been planning that forever.”

“Before or after you asked me to replace the roof?”

She paused only briefly.

“Before.”

My father answered instead.

“Honey, that’s completely different money.”

“Different how?”

“We’ve prayed for that trip for years.”

My mother nodded.

“God finally opened the door.”

I looked down at my palms.

The blisters had burst again overnight.

Fresh blood stained the inside of my gloves.

I raised one hand.

“Then whose prayer paid for this?”

Neither answered.

My father cleared his throat.
