The next morning, Daniel called twice.

I let the phone ring.

That afternoon, he texted.

Mom, please answer.

I didn’t.

By the second day, the calls came every few hours.

Voicemails.

Messages.

Even emails.

I read none of them immediately.

Instead, I opened my laptop.

Something about that meeting kept bothering me.

Not the amount.

Not even the demand.

It was how carefully Marissa had controlled the conversation.

Every time I asked a question, she answered for Daniel.

Every single time.

That evening I searched public court records.

Old habit.

Accountants learn to verify before believing.

I typed the name of Marissa’s younger brother.

Ethan Brooks.

The first search returned nothing unusual.

The second search, using a different state where he had lived years earlier, produced several civil lawsuits.

One had been dismissed.

Another involved an investment dispute.

None proved fraud.

But all sounded strangely familiar.

Real estate.

Private investors.

Promises of unusually high returns.

I printed the records anyway.

The following morning I called an old coworker, Linda, who had spent years auditing commercial lending files before retiring.

She still loved digging through public records.

“Can I ask you something?”

“If you’re calling before ten in the morning, it’s serious.”

I laughed.

Then I explained everything.

She became quiet.

“Margaret… don’t send them a dollar.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

There was a pause.

“Give me a day.”

Late that afternoon, Linda called back.

“I found something interesting.”

I grabbed a notebook.

“Go ahead.”

“Your daughter-in-law’s brother has been connected to at least three failed property investment groups over the past several years.”

“Criminal?”

“Not officially.”

Another pause.

“But investors kept accusing him of disappearing after collecting money.”

I thanked her and hung up.

Then I finally opened Daniel’s text messages.

There were dozens.

Most simply said:

Please call me.

One caught my attention.

It had arrived at 2:13 that morning.

Mom… I think I made a terrible mistake.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

At exactly that moment, another call came in.

Daniel.

I watched it ring until voicemail.

Five minutes later came another.

Then another.

By the end of the third day, my phone showed 98 missed calls.

I still hadn’t answered.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed Daniel to be ready to tell me the truth instead of the version someone else had written for him.

On the morning of the fourth day, I sent him a single text.

Meet me at the diner on Maple Street. Come alone. Bring every document you signed.

He Finally Came Alone

Daniel walked into the diner carrying a worn black laptop bag instead of the confident smile I had seen for years.

He looked as though he hadn’t slept.

His beard had grown in unevenly, and his dress shirt was wrinkled beneath a light jacket.

When he spotted me, he hesitated before sliding into the booth across from mine.

Neither of us spoke until the waitress filled our coffee cups.

After she walked away, Daniel placed a thick stack of folders on the table.

“I brought everything.”

I didn’t reach for them.

Instead, I asked the question I had wanted to ask from the beginning.

“Did Marissa know you were meeting me?”

He looked down.

“No.”

That was the first honest answer he had given me in days.

I nodded toward the folders.

“Tell me what really happened.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

For nearly a minute, he stared through the diner window at the empty parking lot.

Then the words finally came.

“The investment wasn’t mine.”

I remained silent.

“It was Ethan’s idea.”

Marissa’s younger brother.

The same name I had spent two days researching.

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“He said he’d been buying commercial properties before they hit the market. He promised returns in six months.”

“How much did you put in?”

“Everything we had.”

I waited.

There was more.

He swallowed.

“When the project started collapsing… Ethan kept asking for more money.”

I leaned forward.

“Where did that money come from?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“The company.”

The waitress returned with our breakfast.

Neither of us touched it.

“What do you mean, the company?”

His voice dropped so low I almost couldn’t hear him.

“Customer deposits.”

I felt my fingers tighten around my coffee mug.

Daniel worked for a regional construction supplier.

Contractors often paid deposits weeks before materials were delivered.
