Part 2 of 3

Yet tens of thousands of dollars had moved there.

So I copied records.

Dates.

Transfers.

Emails.

Invoices.

I did not know exactly what they meant yet.

I only knew I would rather have documents I never needed than desperately need documents I had failed to save.

That folder went into my suitcase at 4:36 that morning.

The Woman Who Asked No Questions

I drove nearly an hour to Durham before Hallie began crying.

By then, dawn had started turning the sky pale gray.

There was only one person I could imagine calling.

Her name was Gloria Benton.

Gloria had supervised me during my first accounting internship when I was twenty-two. She was now retired and lived alone in a modest brick house with green shutters and an enormous maple tree in the front yard.

She had always told me, “If the ground ever disappears under your feet, find somewhere solid before you decide what comes next.”

At 5:41 a.m., I stood on her porch holding Hallie.

Gloria opened the door in slippers and a bathrobe.

She took one look at my suitcase.

Then she opened the door wider.

“Guest room is upstairs. Coffee first or sleep first?”

That simple question nearly made me cry harder than Grant’s request for a divorce.

“Coffee,” I whispered.

Half an hour later, we sat at her kitchen table.

Hallie was asleep in a portable crib Gloria kept for her grandchildren.

I finally told her what had happened.

When I finished, Gloria remained silent for a moment.

Then she asked, “Do you want him back?”

I stared at my coffee.

That question surprised me.

Finally, I said, “I want the man I thought I married back.”

Gloria nodded.

“That’s not the same thing.”

No.

It wasn’t.

I placed the folder and external drive on her kitchen table.

“I think there may be more going on.”

She looked at the documents.

“Then don’t confront anybody until someone qualified has looked at these.”

That afternoon, Gloria gave me the number of an attorney.

His name was Jonah Mercer.

The Meeting That Changed Everything

Jonah Mercer’s office was above a locally owned bookstore in downtown Durham.

Nothing about the place looked intimidating.

There were plants near the windows, legal books stacked everywhere, and an old coffee machine humming in the corner.

Jonah was in his early fifties, calm, deliberate, and remarkably patient.

For almost forty minutes, he said very little.

He simply read.

Then he read several pages again.

Finally, he removed his glasses.

“Did your husband know you kept these records?”

“No.”

“Good.”

I immediately felt guilty.

“I wasn’t trying to spy on him.”

Jonah shook his head.

“You don’t need to apologize for keeping records concerning assets that may belong partly to you.”

He pointed to several transfers.

“This money originated from an account containing your separate inheritance?”

“Yes.”

“And you never agreed to permanently transfer it into his parents’ property?”

“No. Grant told me it was temporary and related to our future house.”

Jonah sat back.

“Tessa, you may have considerably more financial protection than your husband expects.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about Blue Cedar Advisory?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He tapped the folder.

“But I know enough to say we should request a complete accounting.”

I looked down at my hands.

“I don’t want to destroy anyone.”

Jonah’s voice remained calm.

“Then don’t. We’re not here to destroy people. We’re here to make sure nobody gets to rewrite the facts.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Three days later, we filed.

The Halsteads Realized I Had Not Disappeared

Grant began texting almost immediately.

First:

“You didn’t need to involve attorneys.”

Then:

“Come home. We can handle this privately.”

Later:

“My parents are extremely upset.”

That message almost made me laugh.

His parents were upset.

Apparently, the woman who had spent two months caring for a newborn while preparing their breakfasts before sunrise was not expected to be upset.

I did not respond.

Two days later, Marjorie arrived at Gloria’s house.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried the same expensive handbag she took to every charity luncheon.

She glanced at Gloria’s modest home before looking at me.

“Tessa, this has gone far enough.”

“What has?”

“This performance.”

I almost admired how confidently she said it.

“Grant made an unfortunate comment when he was exhausted. That doesn’t mean you take my granddaughter away and start making accusations.”

I kept my voice even.

“Grant didn’t make a comment. He asked for a divorce.”

Marjorie sighed.

“Men under pressure sometimes say things they don’t mean.”

“Then he can explain that to his attorney.”

Her face changed.

“You need to understand that the Halsteads have spent decades building our reputation.”

There it was.

Not Hallie.

Not Grant.

Not my marriage.

Their reputation.

I looked directly at her.

“Maybe that’s why you’re standing here instead of your son.”

Marjorie stepped closer.

“Be careful, Tessa. You are making decisions that could follow you for years.”

I nodded.
