He brought coffee outside.

He unlocked the gate and wrapped a blanket around my shoulders.

“I hate when we get like this.”

I remember those exact words.

We.

Not him.

We.

I drank the coffee.

He kissed the top of my head.

By lunchtime, I was comforting him.

Three nights later, he locked me inside again.

Now Rebecca was asking whether I wanted to leave.

And Daniel was asking whether I still deserved to call myself his mother.

“Margaret?” Rebecca called.

Daniel shook his head.

“Think about what you’re doing.”

I looked down.

The paper plate was still near my shoe.

One piece of chicken had fallen into the dirt.

The other had landed against the kennel fence.

I remembered Daniel throwing it through the opening.

Dinner.

As if that single word made it normal.

Rebecca didn’t tell me what to do.

She didn’t shout.

She didn’t say Daniel was terrible.

She didn’t promise everything would be okay.

She just waited.

That may have been why I finally answered.

I looked directly at her.

“Yes.”

Daniel went still.

Rebecca lowered the phone slightly.

“Yes what, Margaret?”

My voice shook.

I said it again.

“Yes. I want to leave.”

Daniel stared at me.

Then he looked at Rebecca.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

I heard a car somewhere on the road.

A dog barked two houses away.

Water continued dripping from the end of the garden hose.

Daniel reached for the key.

My knees almost gave out.

He unclipped it from his belt.

The little brass key rested between his thumb and index finger.

I moved toward the gate.

“Thank you.”

Daniel looked at me.

I stopped.

His fingers closed around the key.

Then he put it in his pocket.

He Put the Key Away

“Daniel.”

He turned from me.

Rebecca raised her voice.

“Open the gate.”

“Stay out of this.”

“I already called.”

Daniel looked at her phone.

“Called who?”

Rebecca didn’t answer.

He took two steps toward the fence.

“Who did you call?”

“Someone who can help Margaret.”

Daniel pointed at me.

“She doesn’t need help.”

Rebecca’s voice remained steady.

“She just told you she does.”

He looked back at me.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

There it was.

The old answer.

If I agreed with Daniel, I was perfectly capable of making decisions.

If I disagreed, I was confused.

I moved closer to the gate.

“Give me the key.”

Daniel stared at me.

“Go inside, Mom.”

For half a second, I almost laughed.

I put both hands on the locked gate.

“I can’t.”

He looked at the padlock.

Then away.

Rebecca said nothing.

Daniel’s face flushed.

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

My voice came out steadier than I expected.

“I don’t anymore.”

He took another step toward the neighboring yard.

Rebecca backed closer to her porch door but didn’t go inside.

“Stay where you are, Daniel.”

He stopped.

“Are you threatening me now?”

“I’m asking you to stay in your yard.”

“I am in my yard.”

He smiled.

It was the same polite smile he used when neighbors asked how I was doing.

“This whole thing is ridiculous.”

Rebecca kept the phone near her ear.

“Then unlock the kennel.”

“You don’t get to tell me what to do on my property.”

“Margaret asked to leave.”

“Margaret is my mother.”

Rebecca looked past him at me.

“And Margaret can answer for herself.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

I had never heard anyone say that to him.

Not since I moved into his house.

Maybe not for years.

He turned toward me.

“Tell her you’re staying.”

I shook my head.

“Mom.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Don’t do this.”

“Give me the key.”

His hand went into his pocket.

I heard the keys move.

For a second, I thought he had changed his mind.

He pulled his hand back out empty.

Then he bent down.

Not toward the padlock.

Toward the garden hose.

Rebecca saw it too.

“Daniel.”

He picked it up.

My stomach tightened.

I backed away from the gate automatically.

That movement made him glance at me.

He saw what I expected.

He saw me preparing for the water.

Something in his expression shifted.

Then, very slowly, Daniel turned away from the kennel.

He wasn’t pointing the hose at me.

He was looking at Rebecca.

“Go inside your house.”

Rebecca didn’t move.

Her porch light cast a wide white square across the grass.

She held the phone with both hands now.

“Stay where you are.”

Daniel started walking.

“Daniel, stop.”

He kept going.

I grabbed the wire.

“Daniel.”

He crossed the middle of the yard.

Rebecca remained under the porch light.

“Do not come over here.”

Daniel dragged the hose behind him.

It caught briefly against the leg of the patio table, then snapped free.

“You wanted to involve yourself?” he said.

“Fine.”

I pulled on the gate.

The padlock struck the metal frame.

“Daniel, leave her alone.”

He didn’t look back.

I pulled harder.

The entire kennel shook.

For weeks, Daniel had told me that nobody could hear me.

Nobody would believe me.

Nobody cared enough to come outside.

But Rebecca was still there.

She had seen the lock.

She had heard my voice.

And somewhere beyond the backyard, someone she had called was coming.

Daniel reached the fence.

I wrapped both hands around the cold wire and shouted his name.

This time, I wasn’t asking my son to let me out.

I was making sure the whole neighborhood could hear me.
