“I founded Northstar Meridian Group.”

I thought I had misunderstood.

Northstar Meridian was one of the largest privately held infrastructure and logistics companies in the region.

Warehouses.

Freight terminals.

Industrial parks.

Transportation projects.

I stared at him.

“Silas Rowe? The Silas Rowe?”

He nodded.

My supposed penniless husband wasn’t poor.

He was worth more money than anyone in my family had ever imagined.

Why He Pretended to Have Nothing

My surprise quickly became anger.

“You could have stopped what happened at that courthouse.”

“Yes.”

“You could have told them who you were.”

“Yes.”

“But you stood there and watched them humiliate me.”

Silas lowered his eyes.

For months, his company had been investigating suspicious transactions connected to one of its contractors.

Those transactions eventually led to businesses associated with Marlene—and to Preston Hale.

Silas had temporarily moved into the area and disguised his identity because he wanted to see who was involved before anyone realized they were being investigated.

Mrs. Calloway had known my mother years earlier.

Through her, Silas learned about me.

When he discovered Marlene intended to marry me off to the man she believed was an ordinary lumber worker, he agreed because he thought it would keep me away from whatever was happening at the company.

I shook my head.

“You didn’t protect me. You tested me.”

Silas didn’t argue.

That told me enough.

I packed my suitcase and moved into Mrs. Calloway’s spare room.

The next morning, Silas arrived carrying two folders.

The first contained information about Preston.

His expensive cars were leased.

Several properties he claimed to own belonged to other people.

His investment history was exaggerated, and he was carrying enormous debts.

Then Silas placed his hand on the second folder.

“This one is about your mother.”

My anger disappeared.

“Give it to me.”

He hesitated.

“Tessa, what we found could change who legally controls Langford Textiles.”

Before I could respond, Mrs. Calloway entered carrying an old metal box.

She placed it in front of me.

“Your mother gave me something fourteen years ago.”

Inside was a letter.

What My Mother Left Behind

I recognized Mom’s handwriting immediately.

She wrote about her illness.

About the factory.

About financial transfers that worried her.

And about Marlene, who had already become involved in my father’s life as a business adviser before my mother passed away.

Then I found a sentence written specifically for me.

“If anyone ever makes you believe you’re a stranger in this company, remember that your great-grandmother helped build it with her own hands. Your place cannot disappear simply because someone chooses to deny it.”

I couldn’t speak.

Silas opened the second folder.

My mother had owned 42 percent of Langford Textiles.

After her death, those shares were supposed to remain in trust until I turned twenty-five.

I was thirty-two.

I had never received them.

A document supposedly showed that I had surrendered my rights shortly after my mother’s death.

There was one obvious problem.

I had been fourteen years old.

Silas’s investigators discovered irregularities in the notarization.

Over the following years, money connected to my mother’s ownership had been redirected into businesses controlled by Marlene.

The money helped pay for renovations.

Vehicles.

Vacations.

Jewelry.

Even Brielle’s private college tuition.

My hands trembled.

“Did my father know?”

“He says Marlene told him he was signing temporary management documents.”

I stared at Silas.

“A man who runs a manufacturing company doesn’t sign documents for fourteen years without asking questions.”

Silas didn’t defend him.

Neither did I.

Four Black SUVs

The following morning, my father arrived at the cabin with Marlene and Brielle.

Marlene looked at my borrowed sweater and muddy boots.

“Tessa, look at yourself.”

I smiled faintly.

“For the first time in years, I actually recognize myself.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Come home.”

I shook my head.

“Yesterday I didn’t have a home.”

Marlene interrupted.

“This ridiculous marriage is over. We’ll pay him whatever we promised.”

She pulled an envelope from her purse and tossed it near Silas’s feet.

“Take it and disappear.”

Silas didn’t even look down.

“Pick that up.”

Marlene laughed.

Then we heard engines.

Four black SUVs appeared between the trees.

They stopped outside the cabin.

A man wearing a dark suit stepped from the first vehicle and walked directly toward Silas.

“Everything is ready, Mr. Rowe. The board is waiting for your authorization.”

My father’s face lost its color.

“Rowe?”

He stared at Silas.

“Silas Rowe… Northstar Meridian?”

“Yes.”

Brielle slowly lowered her phone.

Marlene’s expression changed almost instantly.
