Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Widowed Father Finally Started Dating Again Twelve Years After My Mother’s Death, but Every Woman Promised a Second Date Before Disappearing Overnight—When My Best Friend Tried to Discover Why, Received Anonymous Photos of Their Dinner Before Dawn, and Vanished the Very Next Morning Too, I Realized Someone Had Been Watching Every Single Date

Part 2 of 3

“Almost nobody.”

Her younger brother, Dylan, had struggled with opioid addiction years earlier. He had completed treatment, rebuilt his life, and recently started working as an electrician.

Only close friends knew the details.

Dad certainly didn’t.

Neither had I.

Whoever sent those messages had done real research.

Or had been watching Rachel long before that dinner.

I looked back at the screenshots.

The anonymous sender never asked for money.

Never insulted my father.

Never flirted with Rachel.

Only one instruction appeared over and over.

Stay away from him.

That sentence appeared eight different times.

I suddenly understood why every woman had vanished.

They hadn’t rejected Dad.

Someone had frightened them into disappearing.

My Father Became a Suspect

Driving to Dad’s house, I barely touched the accelerator.

My brain kept returning to the same impossible question.

Who benefited from keeping him alone?

When Dad opened the front door, he immediately noticed my expression.

“What’s wrong?”

I handed him the envelope.

He read every page in complete silence.

Halfway through, he slowly lowered himself into a kitchen chair.

“These aren’t fake.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

For one terrible second I wondered whether he already knew who had sent them.

Whether there was something about his past he’d never told me.

Whether every failed relationship had happened for a reason.

I hated myself for even thinking it.

Finally I asked anyway.

“Dad… is there anyone who would do something like this?”

He stared at me as though I had spoken another language.

“Lola…”

His voice cracked.

“I swear to you, I have never seen these messages before.”

He reached for his phone.

“Give me Rachel’s number.”

“She doesn’t want contact.”

He nodded immediately.

“That’s fair.”

There wasn’t even a hint of anger.

Only confusion.

He looked ten years older than he had the night before.

After several quiet minutes he stood.

“Let’s check something.”

He led me into his small home office.

His desktop computer sat exactly where it always had.

Family photos lined the shelves.

Mom smiled from nearly every frame.

Dad logged into every account he owned.

Dating profiles.

Email.

Cloud storage.

Phone backups.

Nothing unusual.

No fake accounts.

No hidden conversations.

No suspicious searches.

We even checked whether anyone had installed tracking software on his phone.

Nothing.

The more we searched, the less guilty he looked.

Then Dad remembered something.

“The security cameras.”

He had installed doorbell cameras after several package thefts the previous winter.

We opened the recordings.

Most showed nothing except delivery drivers and neighborhood dogs.

Then we reached the night of his dinner with Rachel.

11:42 p.m.

Dad’s car pulled into the driveway.

He walked toward the front porch.

Behind him, almost across the street, another figure stood beneath a maple tree.

The person wore a baseball cap and dark jacket.

They remained perfectly still until Dad entered the house.

Then they slowly turned and walked away.

Dad paused the video.

“Can we zoom in?”

The image became grainy.

The face remained hidden.

But the person’s shoes were surprisingly clear.

Brown leather ankle boots with a wide brass buckle wrapped around each ankle.

Something about them bothered me.

I’d seen those boots before.

I just couldn’t remember where.

The Boots I Had Seen Since Childhood

For the next two days I couldn’t stop thinking about those shoes.

I enlarged the image.

Printed screenshots.

Compared online brands.

Nothing.

Then Sunday arrived.

Every first Sunday of the month I visited my mother’s grave.

Dad came too.

We placed fresh white lilies into the vase exactly as we always had.

As we walked back toward the parking lot, another bouquet caught my eye.

Someone had already visited Mom earlier that morning.

The flowers were fresh.

Very fresh.

Dad noticed too.

“Probably your Aunt Sabrina.”

Of course.

Mom’s younger sister never missed a month.

We found her exactly where Dad expected.

She stood near her SUV speaking with another family from church.

When she turned around to hug me, my eyes dropped automatically.

Brown leather boots.

Wide brass buckles.

Exactly like the footage.

My heart skipped.

Maybe dozens of women owned similar boots.

That proved nothing.

Still…

I couldn’t stop staring.

Sabrina noticed.

“Sweetheart?”

“I like your boots.”

She smiled.

“I’ve had these forever.”

Forever.

The word echoed strangely in my head.

She had worn them every winter since I was in high school.

That afternoon I drove home and replayed the security footage again.

The gait matched surprisingly well.

The slight outward turn of the left foot.

The same height.

The same posture.

Still not enough.

I needed more than a pair of boots.

I started thinking backward.

Every woman Dad had dated.

Every place.

Every timeline.

One detail finally connected them all.

Sabrina always seemed to know when Dad had gone on a date.

She would casually call the next day.

“How did dinner go?”

Or she’d stop by with leftovers.

Or she’d mention she’d been “in the neighborhood.”

At the time it had felt caring.

Now it felt… different.

I opened social media and searched old photographs.

Years of family gatherings.

Christmas dinners.

Church picnics.

Birthday barbecues.

There they were.

The same boots.

Again.

And again.

And again.

I closed my laptop.

Without another word, I picked up my phone and called Rachel.

“I think I know who has been making everyone disappear.”

Part 2 — The Woman Who Never Called Back

Rachel was silent for several seconds after I told her.

Then she said, “Sabrina? Your aunt Sabrina?”

“I said I think. I don’t know yet.”

I stared at the frozen security footage on my laptop.

Brown leather boots. Brass buckles. A figure beneath a maple tree, watching my father enter his house.

I wanted desperately to be wrong.

Sabrina had been part of my life forever. After Mom died, she brought food every Sunday. She remembered Dad’s birthday. She helped me through college.

But whoever had frightened nine women away knew things a stranger shouldn’t know.

I asked Rachel to resend every screenshot.

This time I studied the photographs instead of the threats.

One showed her brother Dylan entering a recovery center years earlier. A banner behind him advertised a charity event.

I recognized the organization.

Sabrina had volunteered with a church outreach program connected to that center.

My stomach tightened.

It wasn’t proof.

But it was another coincidence I couldn’t ignore.

That evening, I drove to Dad’s house.

“I need to ask you something about Sabrina.”

He immediately frowned.

“What about her?”

“Did she ever have feelings for you?”

Dad laughed.

Then he saw my face.

I told him everything—the boots, the cemetery, the calls after his dates, the recovery center.

His expression hardened.

“Lola, we are not accusing your aunt because she owns a pair of boots.”

“Someone photographed Rachel. Someone knew private information about her family. Someone stood outside your house.”

“Sabrina helped me bury your mother.”

“I know.”

“Then you understand what you’re suggesting.”

I did.

That was exactly what frightened me.

Sabrina had been close enough to know Dad’s schedule, his dates, his favorite restaurants and almost everything happening in his life.

Then I remembered one of the anonymous messages.

You don’t know what kind of man Richard Bennett really is.

“Dad, did anything ever happen between you and Sabrina before Mom?”

His face changed.
