“My Wife Suspects Nothing.” He Whispered To The Woman He Once Loved. Then He Took Her Upstairs And Kissed Her In Our Bedroom. They Thought The Door Had Hidden Everything. It Hadn’t. A Tiny Camera Was Watching—and So Were Twenty-Two Members Of His Family, Silently Staring At The Projector In The Living Room.

Part 2 of 3

Jealous.

Controlling.

Insecure.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Elise was his first serious relationship, so naturally there will always be some affection there.”

Affection.

Another polished word for something ugly.

Then she smiled.

“Why not leave them alone? They probably need to discuss business.”

For months, I had imagined what I would do if I finally caught Nathan.

I pictured screaming.

Crying.

Throwing something.

Confronting Elise.

Collapsing beneath the weight of confirmation.

Instead, I felt calm.

Ambiguity had exhausted me far more than truth ever could.

I smiled at Margaret.

“You’re right.”

Her expression softened with relief.

Then I added:

“Actually, everyone should see exactly what they’re discussing.”

Her smile vanished.

Part 4 — The Screen Above the Fireplace

The projector remote was exactly where I had left it.

I put down my wineglass and crossed the living room.

Margaret followed.

“Caroline?”

I turned toward the family.

“Since everyone is here, Nathan and I have a little surprise.”

Margaret brightened again.

“A surprise?”

“A look back at our history.”

The phrase sounded harmless enough.

Margaret clapped twice.

“Everyone, Caroline has something to show us.”

Twenty-two relatives turned toward the screen above the fireplace.

For one ridiculous second, I nearly lost my nerve.

These people had attended our wedding.

Toasted our marriage.

Spent the entire evening describing Nathan as extraordinary.

Did they deserve to witness something so private?

Probably not.

Did I owe Nathan one more minute of protecting his reputation while he betrayed me upstairs?

Absolutely not.

I dimmed the lights.

The projector came alive.

Then I opened the bedroom camera feed.

At first, no one understood what they were looking at.

Our upholstered blue headboard filled the screen.

The floor lamp.

Cream curtains.

Nathan’s jacket thrown across a chair.

Then Elise stepped into view.

The zipper of her cream dress had been lowered partway.

Nathan appeared behind her with one hand on her waist.

The entire room seemed to stop breathing.

Nathan kissed her neck.

She turned.

Then they kissed.

Margaret’s wineglass slipped from her hand and shattered across the hardwood floor.

Nobody looked down.

Every face remained fixed on the screen.

Then Nathan spoke clearly enough for the microphone to capture it.

“She doesn’t suspect anything.”

That hurt more than the kiss.

William shot to his feet.

“Nathan!”

Because the intercom function was still connected, his voice carried upstairs through the house speakers.

On the screen, Nathan froze.

Elise’s eyes widened.

“What was that?”

Nathan turned slowly.

Then he saw the tiny camera light.

I had seen my husband frightened before.

Nothing compared with the terror on his face when he realized the entire family was watching.

He approached the camera.

“Caroline?”

I activated the microphone.

“Hello, Nathan.”

His hand stopped.

I smiled without feeling anything resembling triumph.

“Surprise.”

Part 5 — The Perfect Son Comes Downstairs

Chaos erupted immediately.

Margaret reached for the remote.

“Turn it off!”

I pulled my hand away.

William shouted toward the screen.

Patricia covered her mouth.

Another relative stared at the floor.

Elise moved out of view while Nathan lunged toward the camera.

The picture shook.

Then disappeared.

I switched off the projector and turned the living-room lights back on.

Twenty-one faces slowly turned toward me.

I had imagined this moment as vindication.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

Margaret spoke first.

“How long have you known?”

“I didn’t know. I suspected for months.”

William headed toward the staircase.

“I’m going up there.”

I stopped him.

“No.”

He stared at me.

“He’s my son.”

“And he is still my husband tonight. I don’t need you dragging him downstairs.”

Fast footsteps sounded overhead.

A door slammed.

Then Nathan appeared at the top of the staircase.

His shirt was only partly buttoned.

His face had completely drained of color.

He descended slowly.

Nobody helped him.

When he reached the bottom, he looked directly at me.

“Caroline.”

He had said my name thousands of times.

That was the first time it sounded like a plea.

“Can we talk privately?”

William gave a humorless laugh.

“Now you want privacy?”

Nathan began trying to explain.

I stopped him.

“Please don’t tell me this isn’t what it looked like, because twenty-two people just watched you kissing another woman in our bedroom.”

Nathan opened his mouth.

No explanation appeared.

For months, he had always possessed an answer.

The messages were harmless.

The lunches were professional.

The perfume meant nothing.

The late calls were work.

Now truth had finally taken language away from him.

Elise appeared on the stairs with her dress fastened again.

“I should leave.”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

Nathan turned immediately.

“Elise, wait.”

The entire room shifted.

Even after being exposed, his first instinct was to stop her from leaving rather than move toward his wife.

William said only one word.

“Nathan.”

Something in his voice made Nathan stop.

Elise reached the bottom.

“I’m sorry.”

I studied her.

For months, I had imagined destroying her with words.

Now the anger felt strangely misplaced.

“You should be sorry, but you weren’t married to me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Margaret asked how long the affair had lasted.

Elise looked at Nathan.

The hesitation answered enough.

Nathan finally admitted it.

“Four months.”

Four months of betrayal.

Four months of telling me I was imagining things.

Four months of turning accurate instincts into evidence that something was wrong with me.

I asked how many times.

Nathan did not answer then.

Later, after the house was empty, he gave me the number.

Eight.

Eight decisions.

Eight chances to stop.

Eight times he returned home afterward.

Part 6 — When the Audience Went Home

After Elise left, I asked everyone else to go.

William looked at Nathan with an expression worse than anger.

Disappointment.

Before leaving, he told his son:

“Fix whatever can still be fixed, and if nothing can be fixed, accept that too.”

Margaret stayed behind for another moment.

“I didn’t know.”

I believed she had not known about the affair.

That did not erase everything else.
