Prince William “making excuses” to avoid seeing Kate’s parents

It’s no secret that Prince William and Kate Middleton have shared a long and enduring relationship. They first crossed paths while attending St. Andrew’s University, and what began as a friendship soon blossomed into love.

Despite a brief split in 2007, the Prince and Princess of Wales have remained each other’s steadfast companions for decades. Naturally, this journey also involved getting to know each other’s families.

For Kate Middleton, immersing herself in royal life was likely daunting at first. She had to navigate protocols like bowing or greeting Queen Elizabeth II, William’s grandmother, which could have been stressful. Adding to the pressure, Kate found herself thrust into the public eye as the future king’s girlfriend, facing not just attention but occasional criticism from the media, much to William’s frustration.

On the other hand, Prince William also spent time with Kate’s family: her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, and her siblings, Pippa and James. From the start, Michael and Carole reportedly had an excellent rapport with William. However, a recent report suggests the prince might be avoiding interactions with his in-laws for a particular reason.

William and Kate’s Early Years and Relationship Challenges

It’s astonishing to think William and Kate have been married for over a decade. Their story began in the early 2000s as university friends in Scotland, and their romance soon became public knowledge. By April 2004, the couple’s relationship was splashed across tabloids after being photographed together on a family skiing trip. William was furious about the intrusion, with royal expert Rebecca England stating on Channel 5’s documentary William & Kate: Too Good To Be True:

“Unfortunately for them, a paparazzi photographer took pictures of William and Kate clearly very close on the ski lift together. A red top tabloid newspaper splashed it all over their front page.”

She added, “William was furious, and he was also genuinely worried for Kate and her family about what this would now mean for them.”

The media also scrutinized Kate’s “common” background, questioning her suitability as William’s future wife. A source revealed to the Daily Mail that William found such reports deeply unfair:

“William does not believe that anyone genuinely — or even remotely — connected with him would say such things and is horrified that these reports have emerged.”

The Middleton Family’s Influence on William

Though William and Kate briefly separated in 2007, they quickly reconciled. As their relationship progressed, Kate’s mother, Carole, reportedly grew concerned about the lack of a proposal. According to royal expert Katie Nicholl’s book Kate: The Future Queen, Carole even held a private meeting with William to address his intentions.

“Perhaps it was the constant references to ‘Waity Katie’ which got to William,” Nicholl wrote. “Possibly it was the words of his soon-to-be mother-in-law which rang in the prince’s ears. Before Christmas 2009, Carole Middleton had anxiously asked him when he planned to make an honest woman of her daughter.”

William eventually proposed during a trip to Kenya. Breaking with tradition, he didn’t ask Kate’s father, Michael, for permission beforehand. Instead, he informed him after the proposal.

“Well, I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first and then the realization that he might actually say ‘no’ dawned upon me,” William told ITV News. “So I thought if I ask Kate first, then he can’t really say no.”

After receiving Queen Elizabeth II’s formal consent, William and Kate wed in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 2011. Over the years, William’s bond with Michael and Carole deepened. Having lost his own mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, William found a surrogate family in the Middletons.

“Carole relieved William of such burdens by accepting him for who he was rather than what he was,” royal expert Angela Levin told The Sun. “She made him feel secure, comfortable, and protected.”

Royal podcaster Rachael Andrews echoed this sentiment, saying, “With Carole and Michael, he’s got people to confide in who are removed from the monarchy.”

A Close-Knit Relationship with the Middletons

William embraced the Middletons not just as in-laws but as family. He reportedly enjoyed their laid-back nature and sense of humor. Friends of William noted to Vanity Fair that he appreciated Carole’s youthful spirit and Michael’s humor, with their playful antics often leaving him in stitches.

The couple’s move to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor brought them closer to Kate’s parents, allowing Michael and Carole to play an active role in the lives of their grandchildren, George, Charlotte, and Louis. Carole once shared with Good Housekeeping:

“I cook with them, I muck around dancing, we go on bike rides. As long as I am able to, that’s what I’ll be doing.”

During King Charles III’s coronation in 2023, William reportedly insisted that his in-laws be prominently included in the ceremony, signaling their importance in his life.

The Competitive Streak in Middleton Game Nights

Despite the warmth, there are some activities William reportedly avoids with the Middletons. Royal expert Christopher Andersen revealed to Fox that William tends to dodge the family’s infamous game nights due to their competitive nature.

“William and Kate’s card games are so heated and all-consuming that William makes excuses to avoid being sucked in,” Andersen said.

Kate’s brother, James Middleton, confirmed this during an appearance on The Dog Podcast, explaining how intense the family’s card game sessions could get:

“[William would] perhaps see if Ella [the dog] needed a walk or make an excuse to get down from the table. Racing demon is probably the most fast-paced, competitive one that we all play together.”

Support During Difficult Times

In 2023, the Middleton family rallied around Kate during a challenging period following a cancer diagnosis. Michael and Carole played a pivotal role in helping care for their grandchildren, ensuring they remained shielded from stress.

Royal commentator Duncan Larcombe shared with the Mirror:

“Carole and Michael will have essentially thrown a safety blanket around the young children to help protect them… William is very much like the adopted son to Carole and Michael Middleton – and he always has been.”

Final Thoughts

Prince William’s relationship with the Middletons remains a cornerstone of his family life. Though he may occasionally steer clear of their spirited game nights, the love, support, and humor they share clearly enrich his life, offering a familial bond he treasures deeply.
