Silent Walking’ Is The Latest Trend Gen Z Are Obsessed With

Generation Z, encompassing individuals born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, often perceives themselves as influential in contemporary society. Their impact is frequently showcased through various trends, such as the call to retire skinny jeans and the fervent response to the ‘bed rotting‘ phenomenon.

However, the latest wave gripping Zoomers goes beyond fashion or bedroom decor – it’s called Silent Walking

In a TikTok video shared by Mady Maio, co-host of the Okay Sis podcast, she introduces a trend she unintentionally initiated. Heralding it as a life-changing movement: ‘silent walking.‘ Contrary to the current era dominated by technology, silent walking harks back to when people embraced the simplicity of a walk without the encumbrance of smartphones, music, podcasts, or any technological distractions.

In the video, Maio advocates for a walk devoid of AirPods, podcasts, or music—a venture into solitude with only oneself. Initially hesitant due to anxiety, she describes the initial chaos of the first two minutes. Eventually transcends into a ‘flow state’ where she claims to have gained clarity. According to Maio, silent walking opened a space for introspection. Allowing her to hear the whispers of the universe and her intuition.

While Maio may have popularized silent walking, the term was reportedly coined long before

More specifically, by New York City influencer Arielle Lorre earlier in the year. Lorre extols the benefits of this practice, emphasizing heightened senses and grounding experiences. Despite some social media users praising the trend as a transformative experience, others mock the idea. Labeling it as a rediscovery of a mundane activity—simply walking, devoid of technology.

Some individuals share positive experiences

Describing silent walking as a game-changer for mental well-being and a potent tool for manifesting intentions. However, critics highlight the irony of celebrating a basic, technology-free walk as revolutionary. Questioning whether Generation Z has truly stumbled upon an age-old practice. Sardonic remarks like “Gen Z just discovered walking y’all” underscore the novelty attributed to a routine activity familiar to earlier generations.

The trend sheds light on society’s pervasive dependence on technology. As people poke fun at the notion that a 30-minute walk without devices is considered ‘game-changing,’ it reflects the extent to which technology has permeated everyday life. This phenomenon aligns with studies indicating that excessive online engagement can adversely affect mental well-being.

Science has something important to add

Scientific research suggests that overreliance on digital devices may contribute to lazy thinking and significantly impede cognitive processes. These are essential for understanding and transforming information into knowledge. In essence, while sparking amusement and skepticism, the silent walking trend also serves as a commentary on something more. The delicate balance between technological integration and the need for moments of simplicity and self-reflection in our hyperconnected world.

Whether perceived as a groundbreaking revelation or a nostalgic return to a pre-tech era, the discussion surrounding silent walking underscores the evolving relationship between Generation Z and the omnipresent influence of technology on their lives.
