But When My Father Turned on the Conference Screen, His Face Went Pale…

Part 2 of 3

Over six months, nearly $940,000 had moved through accounts associated with Blake and Harborline.

The money had been used to finance an outside business that was attempting to acquire valuable Northstar contracts through misleading financial disclosures and undisclosed conflicts of interest.

Blake wasn’t simply planning to leave me.

He was using my money to profit from my father’s company.

Chapter 4: The Secret Behind My Inheritance

Blake had always known my father was wealthy.

What he didn’t know was how my inheritance had been structured.

Years earlier, my father had transferred a substantial portion of his Northstar ownership into a family trust for my benefit.

The trust also contained a long-term succession plan.

I had worked in corporate finance before stepping away during my pregnancy, and my father had spent years preparing me to eventually lead the company.

Blake had never taken that possibility seriously.

He assumed my father would hand the business to a male executive.

More importantly, he assumed that anything he could access through our marriage was his to use.

He was wrong.

“We need to protect the remaining money,” I told my father.

“Our attorneys are already working on it,” he replied.

That evening, our legal team sought emergency court protection for the disputed funds. Northstar also suspended Blake’s access to sensitive company systems while an independent investigation began.

The next morning, Blake was scheduled to present his new logistics strategy to the board.

My father wanted the meeting to proceed, with counsel and compliance officers present.

“He’ll have an opportunity to explain every transaction,” Dad said.

I looked toward the bassinets holding my children.

“Then I want to hear that explanation.”

Chapter 5: The Meeting He Never Expected

Friday morning, I remained in my hospital room, recovering from surgery.

A nurse helped position my laptop on the adjustable bedside table.

My father had arranged a secure video connection to the Northstar boardroom.

At 10:00 a.m., the screen displayed twelve directors seated around a polished conference table.

Blake stood near the presentation screen, looking confident.

He began describing an innovative partnership that would supposedly increase company profits.

Then my father interrupted.

“Before we continue, Blake, there’s someone joining us remotely.”

My camera appeared on the boardroom display.

Blake stopped speaking.

“Evelyn?”

I looked directly into the camera.

“Good morning, Blake. Please continue.”

He glanced at my father.

“She’s supposed to be in the hospital.”

“I am,” I replied. “And our children are receiving excellent care.”

His expression shifted.

“Children?”

I let the silence settle.

“We have twins, Blake. A daughter and a son.”

He stared at the screen.

“A son?”

“Yes. The son you never knew about because you couldn’t make time for our appointments.”

For the first time, he seemed genuinely speechless.

Then my father placed a document on the conference table.

“Now, Blake, we’d like to discuss Harborline Strategic Solutions.”

The color drained from his face.

Chapter 6: The Price of His Ambition

Northstar’s general counsel presented the findings of the preliminary audit.

The documents showed payments to Harborline, undisclosed business interests, and communications suggesting Blake had helped an outside company gain access to confidential contract information.

Several directors asked him to explain.

Blake insisted the arrangement was legitimate.

“It’s a strategic investment. I was trying to create value for Northstar.”

My father remained calm.

“Then why did you conceal your financial interest in the vendor?”

Blake hesitated.

“I was going to disclose it after the contract was approved.”

“And why did the investment money come from Evelyn’s account?”

He looked toward my image on the screen.

“We’re married. Our finances are shared.”

I answered quietly.

“Shared access doesn’t mean permission to take money for something I never agreed to.”

The general counsel explained that the board would refer the financial findings to the appropriate authorities and preserve the relevant records.

Blake’s employment was suspended pending the investigation, and the proposed Harborline agreement was withdrawn from consideration.

He stared at my father.

“You can’t do this to me.”

Dad folded his hands.

“You made these decisions yourself, Blake. The company has an obligation to protect its employees, shareholders, and customers.”

Then Blake turned toward the camera.

“Evelyn, we can work this out.”

I thought about the check he had placed beside my hospital bed.

“You already told me what our marriage was worth to you.”

I ended the call.

For the first time in months, I felt as though I could breathe.

Chapter 7: A New Beginning

The investigation lasted several months.

Independent accountants traced additional transfers, and federal investigators reviewed evidence involving suspected wire fraud and financial misconduct.

Blake and Sloane eventually faced criminal charges.

Their attorneys disputed parts of the allegations, and the proceedings continued.

Depending on the final charges and sentencing decisions, Blake’s potential prison exposure could reach twelve years.

No sentence had been imposed.

Meanwhile, my divorce attorney pursued the return of my funds and worked to protect the children’s financial interests.

Blake’s earlier declaration about our daughter having no right to his name carried no authority over her legal rights.

I chose to give both children my surname, Ashford, while the appropriate parentage and custody matters were handled through the court.

During those months, I focused on Rosalie and Emmett.

Their first smiles.

Their tiny hands curling around my fingers.

The quiet mornings when the three of us sat beside the nursery window.

My father visited almost every day.

One afternoon, he brought me a folder.
