And he needed me away long enough to make everything look established before I returned.

The Family Arrived With More Than Overnight Bags

At 10:18 that morning, Grant called again.

“Derek just picked up his mother and sister.”

“Are they heading to the house?”

“Yes. And they have a lot of luggage.”

Then he added something I did not expect.

“The Fosters are also on their way. Derek invited them to walk through the property before their move-in date.”

That changed everything.

I called Benjamin Foster.

At first, he sounded suspicious.

“Who exactly are you?”

“I’m Audrey Sloan. I own the house Derek Sloan rented to you.”

There was a long silence.

“Derek told us he owned it.”

“Would you be willing to meet me there with the paperwork he gave you?”

Benjamin and Laura agreed.

Less than an hour later, Emma and I returned to the house with Rebecca, Grant, and the Fosters.

I unlocked the front door with my own key.

On the dining room table, Rebecca arranged everything neatly: my ownership documents, screenshots of Derek’s messages, the rental agreement, the payment receipt, and copies of the authorization form he had apparently hoped I would sign.

Then we waited.

At 12:07, a vehicle pulled into the driveway.

Emma reached for my hand.

“Is everything going to be okay?”

“Yes,” I said. “We’re just going to tell the truth.”

The front door opened.

Derek walked in first.

Patricia followed with two large suitcases.

Kendra carried a box and a garment bag.

There were more bags outside.

Patricia was smiling as she entered.

“Now we can finally get this place organized properly.”

Then she saw me.

Her smile vanished.

Derek stopped in the doorway.

His eyes moved from me to Rebecca.

Then he noticed Benjamin and Laura.

Finally, he saw the paperwork covering the table.

“Audrey,” he said slowly. “Why are you here?”

I stood.

“I live here.”

The Receipt That Changed the Room

Benjamin stepped forward.

“You told us the house would be empty today.”

Derek’s face lost color.

“There’s been a misunderstanding.”

Laura held up the receipt.

“There was no misunderstanding when you accepted $12,600 from us.”

Kendra turned toward Derek.

“What money?”

Patricia looked confused.

“Who are these people?”

I answered.

“They’re the people Derek promised my house to.”

Patricia stared at her son.

“You rented the house?”

“Mom, let me explain.”

Rebecca calmly placed my ownership records closer to him.

“Before you explain anything else, Audrey has not authorized any lease of this property.”

Derek looked at me.

“We’re married. You would have agreed eventually.”

“Would I?”

He did not answer.

I picked up the draft authorization document.

“Was this how you planned to get my agreement?”

He recognized it instantly.

“You went through my files.”

“You saved a document called ‘Audrey Signature Final’ on our shared computer.”

Patricia moved closer to the table.

“Derek, what is she talking about?”

That was when Grant placed another document beside the others.

It was proof of Patricia’s $68,000 transfer.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Where is my money?”

Derek closed his eyes.

“Mom, not now.”

“Where is it?”

Kendra suddenly spoke.

“Wait. You told me her house was becoming part of the family business.”

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at her.

“He told you that?”

Kendra swallowed.

“He said you were going to let him manage it.”

“I never agreed to anything.”

Kendra looked at Derek as if she were seeing him clearly for the first time.

His Real Problem Was Never the House

Grant had already discovered why Derek needed so much money.

For almost a year, he had been covering a series of poor financial decisions.

Credit cards.

Personal loans.

An investment that had failed.

Money borrowed from an old coworker.

Derek had hidden all of it from me.

Patricia’s money had not gone into a family property venture.

Much of it had gone toward those debts.

The Fosters’ $12,600 had gone into the same account.

Kendra’s savings had disappeared there too.

Patricia lowered herself into a dining chair.

“How much of my money is left?”

Derek rubbed both hands over his face.

“I don’t know exactly.”

“You know exactly.”

He finally answered.

“Maybe twenty-two thousand.”

Patricia stared at him.

“I gave you sixty-eight.”

“I had obligations.”

“You told me it was an investment.”

Kendra stepped forward.

“What about my seventeen thousand?”

Derek did not answer.

Her voice rose.

“Derek, where is my money?”

“Some of it covered expenses.”

“Your expenses?”
