Today You’re Going to Stop Being My Wife,’ My Husband Announced at His Mother’s 75th Birthday in Front of More Than 100 Guests—Then He Walked In With Another Woman and a 3-Year-Old Boy, Told Me to Pack My Things and Stay Away From the Family Business, but Before I Could Answer, Our 10-Year-Old Son Quietly Stepped Onto the Stage. What Our Son Did While Everyone Was Watching Made My Husband Rush Toward the Little Boy

Part 1 of 3

“Today you’re going to stop being my wife, and I want everyone here to be a witness.”

My husband, Joe Vance, said it into a microphone at his mother’s seventy-fifth birthday party.

More than a hundred people turned toward me.

I was standing beside Eleanor’s table at the Greenwich country club, one hand still resting on the back of her chair.

Joe stood near the small stage.

Beside him was a woman I had never met in person.

I knew her name, though.

Tracy.

And holding Tracy’s hand was a little boy in a navy blazer.

Joe placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder.

“Mom,” he said, looking directly at Eleanor, “this is Leo.”

Eleanor stared at the child.

Then Joe added:

“My son.”

The room went almost completely quiet.

Three days earlier, I had found Joe’s second phone in the back of his home-office desk.

I had already seen Leo’s face.

I had watched a video of him running across a backyard toward Joe, shouting one word.

“Daddy!”

I had seen Tracy’s messages.

The hotel confirmations.

The transfers.

The photos.

I hadn’t confronted Joe.

I copied what I could, called an attorney, and put the phone exactly where I had found it.

What I didn’t know was that Joe had planned to introduce his other life at Eleanor’s birthday party.

And I certainly didn’t know he planned to make me part of the entertainment.

The Grandson Eleanor Had Been Waiting For

Eleanor stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.

For one foolish second, I thought she was going to slap Joe.

Instead, she walked toward Leo.

Her face softened.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Leo looked at Tracy first.

Tracy nodded.

Eleanor bent down and opened her arms.

“My precious grandson.”

I looked toward the far side of the ballroom.

Tommy was standing near the dessert table.

My ten-year-old son had heard her.

Of course he had.

Tommy had spent his early childhood going in and out of specialty clinics because of severe respiratory problems. He was healthier now, but Eleanor had never allowed anyone to forget that he had entered the world fragile.

Once, when Tommy was six, she watched him sit out a family soccer game because he was wheezing.

She had sighed and said to Joe, right in front of him:

“The Vance men were always strong boys.”

Joe had told me later that I was being too sensitive.

Now Eleanor was holding Leo’s face between her hands.

“Look at you.”

Then she looked at Joe.

“He looks like a Vance.”

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

Nobody stopped her.

Joe returned to the microphone.

“I know this isn’t the usual way to handle something like this.”

That almost made me laugh.

He continued.

“But there has been unhappiness in my marriage for a long time. Tracy and I are going to build a life together.”

Tracy stared at the floor.

Joe looked at me.

“My attorney will send the paperwork Monday. I hope we can handle this privately from here.”

Privately.

After announcing it to a ballroom full of people.

Then his uncle Robert called from one of the tables:

“Sometimes a man has to think about the future of the family.”

Joe didn’t correct him.

Another relative muttered something about a proper heir.

I looked at Tommy again.

His hands were in his pockets.

Joe stepped down from the stage and stopped several feet from me.

He lowered his voice, but not enough.

“You can stay at your parents’ place until things are sorted out.”

“Why would I do that?”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

“You brought another woman and a three-year-old to your mother’s birthday party.”

Joe glanced toward the guests.

“Keep your voice down.”

I did.

“You have a microphone.”

His face reddened.

Then he said the part that finally explained why this had to happen publicly.

“And don’t turn this into some fight over Vance Holdings. We’ll work out the shares fairly.”

I looked at him.

There it was.

The shares.

Joe’s late father had transferred a block of company stock into my name years earlier, after I helped stabilize a major investor crisis while Joe was overseas.

Joe had spent the last year putting documents in front of me.

Routine paperwork, he called it.

Restructuring.

Voting simplification.

Estate planning.

I had refused to sign anything I didn’t understand.

Three days earlier, the hidden phone had shown me why.

I opened my mouth.

Before I could speak, a small voice came through the ballroom speakers.

“Can I say something?”

Everyone turned.

Tommy was standing on the stage.

And in his right hand was a black USB drive.

What Tommy Had Copied

Joe moved first.

“Tommy, get down from there.”

Tommy looked at Tracy.

“I want to thank you.”

Tracy blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“For taking my dad away from my mom.”

A woman near the front table covered her mouth.

Joe started toward the stage.

“Tommy. Now.”

Tommy lifted the USB.

“I copied Dad’s secret phone.”

Joe stopped.

That was the first moment all evening when he looked frightened.

I was frightened too.

I hadn’t known Tommy had touched the phone.

“What are you talking about?” Joe asked.

“The one you kept behind the tax folders.”

Joe looked at me.

“Did you put him up to this?”

“No.”

That was the truth.

Tommy continued.

“There are messages about Mom’s company shares on here.”

Joe reached for the microphone.

Tommy stepped back.

“And messages about getting her to sign them over.”

“Turn the microphone off.”

Nobody moved.

The event coordinator looked at me.

I shook my head once.

Joe turned toward her.

“I said turn it off.”

Then another voice came from behind me.
