Despite everything, I almost smiled.

“I’ll be careful with Franklin.”

Noah slowly handed him to me.

A section along the bottom had been stitched differently from the rest.

Inside it, I found a small brass key and a piece of paper.

The paper contained only three things:

Lakefront Private Storage.

Box 417.

And a six-digit access number.

The Box That Changed Everything

I called a private investigator named Miles Danner, a former federal investigator I had trusted for years.

Then I asked him to locate Hannah.

While Miles searched, I took the boys to Lakefront Private Storage.

Box 417 contained a black folder, several photographs, a flash drive, and nearly forty letters.

Every letter was addressed to me.

I opened the first.

“Grant, I’m pregnant.”

Another:

“The doctor says there are two babies.”

Another:

“The boys arrived earlier than expected. They’re small, but they’re doing well.”

Another:

“Elliot asked me yesterday whether his father knows his name.”

I had to stop reading.

For years, I had told myself Hannah had abandoned me.

But she had been writing to me the entire time.

Every envelope carried evidence of being redirected, rejected, or returned.

Then I found the photographs.

One showed Hannah outside Ashford Holdings with a double stroller.

Another showed her speaking to Lauren.

My assistant.

The woman who had worked ten feet from my office for eight years.

In the last photograph, Lauren held one of Hannah’s envelopes while Hannah walked away.

I felt sick.

Elliot looked at the photographs.

“Mom came to your building?”

There was no gentle version of the truth.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you come see us?”

That question hurt more than anger would have.

“Because I didn’t know.”

Elliot looked down.

“Mom said people always say they didn’t know when knowing would make them feel bad.”

I had no answer.

The flash drive contained a video.

Hannah appeared on screen.

She looked exhausted.

“Grant, if you’re watching this, I need you to understand that your father knew about the boys before they were born.”

My chest tightened.

She continued.

“He believed their existence could affect the Ashford family trust. Your grandfather’s documents give direct inheritance rights to biological grandchildren. Harrison didn’t want anyone outside his control to have a claim.”

Then she said something impossible.

“Your father is alive.”

The Man I Had Buried

I watched the video twice.

Hannah explained that Harrison had arranged his disappearance after becoming connected to financial irregularities inside several Ashford subsidiaries.

Only a few loyal employees knew.

According to Hannah, he had continued directing money and company decisions through intermediaries.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A voice I had not heard in three years replied:

“You always did need someone else to solve the puzzle for you.”

I stopped breathing.

My father.

“Where is Hannah?”

He ignored the question.

“You have spent your entire life enjoying what I built, Grant. Don’t become sentimental now.”

I looked across the room at Elliot and Noah.

For most of my life, my father’s approval had felt like oxygen.

Now it felt like a locked door.

“Where is she?”

“Come home and we’ll discuss it.”

Home.

He meant the Ashford estate outside Lake Forest.

“I’m not coming to negotiate.”

My father laughed softly.

“Everyone negotiates when they finally understand what they have to lose.”

He ended the call.

Seconds later, Miles called.

He had located Hannah’s apartment.

Someone had entered it during the night.

Hannah was gone.

Lauren Finally Told the Truth

When we returned to headquarters, Lauren was waiting in my office.

I placed the photograph of her and Hannah on the desk.

She looked at it and immediately sat down.

“How long?” I asked.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Grant—”

“How long did you know?”

“Almost six years.”

I could barely process the answer.

“You saw her pregnant?”

Lauren nodded.

“Yes.”

“You saw my sons?”

Another nod.

“Yes.”

I turned toward the window because looking at her was suddenly impossible.

“Why?”

Lauren wiped her face.

“Your father controlled everything. My mother needed financial help, and he paid for it. After that, he made it clear what would happen if I refused him.”

It did not excuse what she had done.

She knew that.

I knew it.

Then she slid a piece of paper across the desk.

An address.

“Hannah is at the old Ashford estate.”

I looked at her.
