When I Walked Into His Boardroom Monday Morning, His Smile Vanished

Part 2 of 3

“Wonderful! Ask for human resources when you arrive.”

I nodded pleasantly.

“I’ll know where to go.”

The Conversation on the Drive Home

Benjamin insisted on walking me to my car.

The moment we reached the driveway, he apologized.

“Mom, I can’t believe he spoke to you like that. And Madison laughing made it worse.”

I squeezed his hand.

“You defended me. That’s what matters.”

He looked troubled.

“I don’t know what to think about this family anymore.”

I studied his face.

“Then don’t rush your decision. Marriage is a long journey, and you deserve someone who respects the people you love.”

He nodded slowly.

Before leaving, he asked something unexpected.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell them?”

I knew exactly what he meant.

Benjamin had always known about the business, although he’d respected my decision to keep my wealth private.

“Because I wanted to know how they would treat me when they believed I had nothing to offer.”

He sighed.

“Well, now you know.”

I looked back at the brightly lit mansion.

“Yes, sweetheart. And I think Monday will be interesting.”

Monday Morning at Corporate Headquarters

At 8:15 Monday morning, I arrived at Prescott Meridian Group’s regional headquarters wearing a tailored charcoal suit.

I carried a leather portfolio containing financial reports, internal correspondence, and several documents I’d requested over the weekend.

Our chief executive officer, Andrew Bellamy, met me in the lobby.

“Good morning, Mrs. Prescott. The leadership team is waiting.”

“Thank you, Andrew. Has Mr. Carlisle arrived?”

“About twenty minutes ago.”

I nodded.

“Excellent.”

When we entered the executive conference room, Lawrence stood near the head of the table, laughing with two department directors.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed immediately.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to understand why the woman he’d mocked over dinner was walking beside the CEO.

“Evelyn?” he whispered.

Andrew smiled professionally.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to welcome Evelyn Prescott, founder and chairwoman of Prescott Meridian Group.”

Silence filled the room.

Lawrence gripped the back of his chair.

“You’re… the owner?”

I placed my portfolio on the table.

“Good morning, Lawrence. I believe you were expecting me.”

His face turned pale.

“I had absolutely no idea.”

“I gathered that on Friday evening.”

Nobody laughed.

The Problem Was Bigger Than One Dinner

I hadn’t come to headquarters merely to embarrass Lawrence.

Over the weekend, I’d reviewed several employee complaints that had been forwarded to our corporate office.

The complaints described unusual staffing reductions, inconsistent bonus payments, and concerns about how certain contractors were selected.

More troubling, several employees claimed they’d been discouraged from raising questions.

Lawrence had repeatedly assured the executive team that his division was performing exceptionally well.

The numbers deserved a closer look.

I opened the first report.

“Lawrence, before we discuss Friday evening, I’d like to understand why your division reduced frontline staffing while increasing executive expenses.”

He cleared his throat.

“Those were strategic decisions.”

“Then you should have no difficulty explaining them.”

For the next forty minutes, we reviewed expense approvals, vendor agreements, and employee compensation records.

Some explanations were reasonable.

Others weren’t.

One maintenance contract had been renewed at nearly twice its previous cost without a competitive bidding process.

Several promised employee bonuses had been postponed while executive discretionary spending increased.

I turned another page.

“Who approved these changes?”

Lawrence hesitated.

“My office handled those decisions.”

“And who reviewed them independently?”

He said nothing.

I closed the folder.

“This company was built by people who worked hard and trusted us to treat them fairly. That responsibility doesn’t disappear when someone reaches an executive office.”

The Woman Who Kept the Receipts

After the meeting, a member of our facilities team asked whether she could speak privately with me.

Her name was Rosa Delgado.

She was fifty-seven and had worked at the headquarters for eleven years.

She entered the room carrying a small cardboard box.

“Mrs. Prescott, I don’t want to cause trouble,” she began.

“You’re not causing trouble by telling the truth.”

Rosa explained that her department had repeatedly requested replacement equipment and additional staffing.

Those requests had been denied.

Meanwhile, she’d noticed expensive renovations taking place in executive offices.

She had kept copies of maintenance requests, budget responses, and emails because she feared the problems would eventually be blamed on her team.

“I know cleaning isn’t glamorous,” she said quietly. “But we work hard. We deserve to be spoken to like people.”

Her words stayed with me.

I thought of Lawrence laughing over dinner.

He hadn’t merely insulted me.

He’d shown how he viewed an entire category of hardworking people.

I thanked Rosa and asked our compliance director to review the documents.

Before she left, I told her something I meant with all my heart.

“There is no such thing as an unimportant employee in a company that depends on everyone’s work.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you, ma’am.”
