Part 1 of 3

The Message I Was Never Supposed to Send

“Brooke isn’t here. Come quickly.”

I sent those five words from my husband’s phone at 8:17 on a Thursday night.

Then I put the phone back on the kitchen counter exactly where Calvin had left it and listened to the shower running down the hall.

For almost a minute, nothing happened.

Then the screen lit up.

Stephanie.

My best friend for twelve years.

“Are you sure?”

A second message appeared before I could touch the phone.

“Give me ten minutes.”

I stared at those words until the screen went dark.

For three months, Calvin had told me I was imagining things.

Stephanie had told me the same thing.

Calvin was working late.

Stephanie was busy.

Calvin had always kept his phone facedown.

Stephanie had always worn that perfume.

The fact that they suddenly knew the same little restaurant downtown was coincidence.

The fact that Stephanie knew Calvin had switched from bourbon to rye was something he must have mentioned at dinner.

Every explanation had been small enough to accept by itself.

Together, they had started keeping me awake.

The shower stopped.

I walked to the living room and sat on the edge of the sofa.

Calvin came out several minutes later wearing gray sweatpants and rubbing a towel over his hair.

“You okay?”

“Fine.”

He looked at me for another second.

“You seem weird.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I picked up the television remote.

“Long day.”

He went back toward the bedroom.

At 8:29, someone knocked.

Not the buzzer downstairs.

Our actual apartment door.

Stephanie knew the building code.

I stood up.

Calvin came back into the hallway.

“Who is that?”

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

I opened the door.

Stephanie stood there in a fitted dark green dress I had never seen before.

Her hair was curled. She wore gold earrings and the expensive perfume Calvin claimed I had imagined smelling in his car.

She was holding a small black purse.

When she saw me, her smile disappeared.

Neither of us spoke.

Her eyes moved past my shoulder.

Calvin was standing behind me.

Stephanie took one step backward.

“Brooke.”

I kept my hand on the doorknob.

“You got here fast.”

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Understanding.

Behind me, Calvin said my name.

I turned.

He wasn’t asking what Stephanie was doing there.

He wasn’t surprised to see her.

He was angry at me.

That answered the only question I still had.

He Didn’t Even Try to Deny It

Stephanie stepped inside after I moved away from the doorway.

She didn’t sit down.

Calvin walked toward the kitchen counter and picked up his phone.

I watched him open the messages.

His jaw tightened.

“You went through my phone?”

That was his first question.

Not why Stephanie had shown up dressed for dinner.

Not why she had responded to a message supposedly from him without asking what he wanted.

His phone.

“How long?” I asked.

“Brooke, we should talk about this calmly.”

Stephanie was staring at the floor.

“How long?”

Calvin put the phone down.

“Six months.”

I looked at Stephanie.

She finally raised her eyes.

Twelve years.

She had been beside me when my father died.

She helped me choose my wedding dress.

She stood three feet from me when I married Calvin.

She had a key to our apartment for emergencies.

Six months earlier, she had taken me out for margaritas on my birthday and listened while I told her I was worried my marriage felt different.

I remembered her reaching across the table and squeezing my hand.

“Don’t let your brain invent problems that aren’t there.”

Now she was standing in my living room wearing perfume for my husband.

I went into the kitchen and opened the drawer where we kept takeout menus, batteries, scissors, and miscellaneous paperwork.

Calvin followed me.

“What are you doing?”

I pulled out a large envelope.

Inside were copies of our mortgage papers, insurance information, recent tax returns, account numbers, and the paperwork for my car.

I had gathered them two days earlier.

Calvin noticed.

“You’ve been planning this?”

“I’ve been preparing to be wrong.”

Stephanie spoke from behind us.

“Brooke, please.”

I turned around.

“Don’t.”

She stopped.

Calvin crossed his arms.

“This isn’t all on her.”

That sentence stayed with me.

I hadn’t accused Stephanie of seducing him.

I hadn’t asked who started it.

But Calvin was already protecting her.

“I didn’t say it was.”

He exhaled and rubbed his forehead.

“Things between us haven’t been good for a while.”

“Then you could’ve told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

He didn’t answer.

I waited.

Stephanie looked toward him.

Calvin picked up his phone again.

“I don’t want to do this tonight.”

“You already did.”

That was the closest I came to shouting.

After that, I became strangely practical.

I put my laptop into its case.

I grabbed my charger.

Two changes of clothes.

Medication.

Passport.

The envelope.

Calvin followed me into the bedroom.

“Where are you going?”

“A hotel.”

“Brooke, don’t make this bigger than it needs to be.”

I stopped folding a sweater.

“Stephanie is in our living room.”

He looked away.

I zipped the bag.

Then he said something I hadn’t expected.

“I’m not ending it with her.”

I looked at him.

His face was calm now.

Almost relieved.

“Okay.”

That seemed to irritate him.

“That’s all you have to say?”

“What would you prefer?”

“I don’t know. Something.”

I lifted my bag.

Calvin stood between me and the bedroom door for a moment, then stepped aside.

“If you can’t accept that my feelings have changed, maybe we should talk about divorce.”

I adjusted the strap on my shoulder.

“Okay.”

This time he looked startled.

“Okay what?”

“Let’s get divorced.”

The Charges I Didn’t Recognize

I stayed at a hotel near my office that night.

At 1:40 in the morning, I was sitting cross-legged on the bed with the financial envelope open beside me.

I wasn’t crying.

I was looking at numbers.

That probably sounds cold.

It wasn’t.

Numbers were simply easier than thinking about Stephanie standing outside my door.

Calvin and I had a joint savings account.

We had been putting money into it for years, mostly for renovations and eventually a larger home.

I logged in.

The balance was lower than I remembered.

Much lower.

I downloaded six months of statements.

There were restaurant charges I didn’t recognize.

A boutique hotel downtown.

Another hotel two hours away.

A jewelry store.

Airline tickets.

A resort charge from a weekend Calvin had told me he was attending a work conference.

I opened my calendar.

That same weekend, Stephanie had told me she was visiting her cousin.

I wrote the amounts down.

Then I stopped.

The total was already several thousand dollars.

I called Ashley the next morning.

She had handled a contract dispute for my design work two years earlier and had since moved into family law.
