His son had been unemployed for almost a year.

Medical bills had nearly wiped out their savings.

Richard spoke one final sentence.

“The boy needs to forget his mother if he’s ever going to move on.”

Frank closed his eyes.

A long moment passed.

He picked up the envelopes.

Instead of destroying Betty’s letters, Frank locked every package inside an old storage room behind the post office.

He convinced himself he would return everything someday.

Construction crews arrived before sunrise.

One young supervisor forced open a warped wooden door hidden behind old filing cabinets.

As Betty carefully lifted the blue wooden truck from the first box, a faded receipt slipped onto the porch.

She picked it up.

It bore the official Cedar Falls Post Office stamp…

Betty looked at the forty-three unopened boxes lined across her porch.

The next morning, Betty drove three hours to a nursing home outside Des Moines.

She carried one of the unopened boxes with her.

The receptionist quietly nodded toward Room 214.

“Mr. Frank Miller has been expecting someone.”

Betty frowned.

“Expecting me?”

The receptionist lowered her voice.

“He saw the news about the old post office on television yesterday.”

Frank Miller was ninety-two years old.

His hands shook so badly he could barely hold a coffee cup.

The moment he saw Betty standing in the doorway…

He covered his face.

Then he started crying.

Not polite tears.

Not quiet tears.

The kind that come after carrying the same weight for far too long.

Betty placed the little blue wooden truck on his bedside table.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Frank whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

Betty didn’t raise her voice.

She simply pulled up a chair.

“Tell me everything.”

Frank nodded slowly.

“Richard came to me a few weeks after your divorce.”

He explained the money.

The promise of a job for his son.

The forwarding addresses.

The locked storage room.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every Thanksgiving.

He never destroyed a single package.

He simply kept telling himself he would return them next year.

Then another year passed.

Until thirty years disappeared.

Frank reached into his bedside cabinet.

Inside was a worn leather notebook held together with a faded rubber band.

“I kept this because I thought… someday… I’d need to tell the truth.”

Every page contained dates.

Moving records.

Forwarding requests.

Apartment numbers.

Rental homes.

Everything Richard had ever filed with the post office while raising David.

Frank handed Betty the notebook with trembling hands.
