“I understand that too.”

Vanessa sighed loudly.

“You promised.”

“No,” I answered quietly. “I offered you a gift. A gift isn’t an obligation.”

Nobody spoke.

I continued before either of them could.

“I spent the weekend realizing something. You don’t need my money. You need an audience.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“You’re taking one awkward joke way too personally.”

“Was it a joke?”

She didn’t answer.

I asked another question.

“Did everyone else receive china plates?”

Silence.

“Did you tell your friends I didn’t belong in your world?”

Still nothing.

Finally Ethan whispered,

“Mom…”

“I waited all weekend for you to tell your wife that wasn’t acceptable.”

He inhaled sharply.

But no explanation came.

Only the sound of breathing.

I looked out my kitchen window at the maple tree my husband had planted twenty years earlier.

Its leaves moved gently in the morning wind.

“I’m keeping the money,” I said. “I hope you find another apartment you can actually afford.”

I ended the call before anyone argued.

For the first time in years, the forty thousand dollars was still mine.

And so was my voice.

The Calls Wouldn’t Stop

By the end of that week, I had memorized the sound of Ethan’s ringtone.

He called before breakfast.

During lunch.

Late at night.

Sometimes Vanessa called first. Sometimes they took turns.

I answered only when I thought Ethan might finally want to have a real conversation.

Instead, every call returned to the same subject.

The forty thousand dollars.

“Mom, we’re running out of time,” Ethan said one evening.

“Then find another apartment.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“No,” I replied. “It’s actually very simple. Rent a place you can afford.”

Vanessa’s voice appeared through the speaker.

“You don’t understand how people judge us out here.”

I looked around my small kitchen.

The refrigerator still had the school fundraiser magnet from my final year as principal.

“Maybe they shouldn’t matter that much.”

She laughed.

“Easy for you to say.”

“You’re right,” I answered. “Because I stopped trying to impress strangers years ago.”

She hung up before I finished speaking.

An Ultimatum I Never Expected

Two weeks later Ethan called again.

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Tired.

“Can we talk?”

I expected another argument.

Instead he hesitated for nearly half a minute.

Finally he said,

“Vanessa thinks if I don’t convince you, then… maybe I’m choosing you over our marriage.”

I stayed quiet.

He continued.

“She says this is a test.”

“Is it?”

“She thinks if you really loved us, you’d send the money.”

I walked to my living room window.

The maple tree outside had begun turning red.

My husband had planted it when Ethan was seven.

I remembered Ethan helping him shovel dirt with a toy bucket.

“Love isn’t measured by wire transfers,” I said softly.

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.”

“Yeah?”

“Do you actually want that apartment?”

Another silence.

Longer this time.

“…I don’t know anymore.”

That answer stayed with me all night.

The Picture Started Cracking

A few days later Ethan accidentally called while driving.

I answered before he realized it.

He wasn’t speaking to me.

He was arguing with Vanessa.

“We can’t keep putting everything on credit.”

“Everyone does.”

“Not like this.”

“Our clients expect a certain lifestyle.”

“Our clients don’t pay our bills.”

I heard the turn signal clicking.

Then silence.

A second later Ethan realized I was still connected.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

He sounded embarrassed.

“I’ll call you later.”

He disconnected.

For the first time, I wasn’t thinking about the canceled transfer.

I was thinking about how exhausted my son sounded.

The Truth Finally Came Out

Three more weeks passed before Ethan asked if we could talk over Zoom.

When his face appeared on my laptop screen, I almost didn’t recognize him.

He had lost weight.

Dark circles sat beneath his eyes.

Vanessa wasn’t beside him.

He looked around the room before speaking.
