Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

“You Don’t Need Three Million Dollars at Your Age,” I Thought My Children Were Coming Over to Talk About the Farm I Had Just Sold, but the Moment My Daughter Locked the Door and My Son Stepped Between Me and the Exit, I Knew Something Was Terribly Wrong

Part 1 of 3

Marcus placed both palms on my kitchen island and leaned toward me.

“We’re not leaving until you divide the money.”

His sister Rachel stood beside him with a leather folder pressed against her chest. She had already locked my front door.

I looked from one child to the other.

They were both in their forties. Marcus wore the navy jacket I had bought him for his last job interview. Rachel still had the pearl earrings her father gave her on her thirtieth birthday.

On the counter between us sat my blue ceramic coffee cup and a sealed white envelope from my attorney.

Neither of them had asked why the envelope was there.

“The farm sold on Friday,” Marcus said. “Three million dollars. We know the exact amount.”

“It was three million before taxes and expenses,” I said.

Rachel lowered the folder.

“That isn’t the point, Mom.”

“Then what is the point?”

She sighed as though I were making a simple conversation difficult.

“The farm belonged to the family. Marcus and I are the family. We need access to the account.”

I rested one hand on the edge of the island. My fingers had started trembling, so I curled them underneath the granite.

“The farm belonged to your father and me.”

Marcus straightened.

“Dad is dead.”

The refrigerator hummed behind him.

I watched Rachel glance down at the folder, but she said nothing.

My husband, Thomas, had been gone for six years. He had spent nearly forty of his seventy-two years waking before sunrise to tend that farm. Marcus had worked there for two summers in high school. Rachel had stopped visiting after she moved to Chicago.

Still, both of them had begun calling it “our farm” as soon as they learned I planned to sell it.

“You promised we’d inherit it,” Marcus said.

“I said I hoped there would be something left for you.”

“Same thing.”

“No, it isn’t.”

His mouth tightened.

Rachel stepped between us before he could answer.

“Nobody wants to upset you. We’re trying to make this easier.”

She opened the leather folder and placed a document on top of my coffee cup’s shadow.

A yellow tab marked the signature line.

The Paper Rachel Wanted Me to Sign

I did not touch the document.

“What is that?”

“A limited power of attorney,” Rachel said. “It lets us help manage the proceeds.”

“Us?”

“Marcus and me.”

“Who prepared it?”

She paused.

“An attorney.”

“Which attorney?”

Marcus slapped one hand against the island.

My coffee jumped inside the cup.

“Why does everything have to be a fight with you?”

I kept my eyes on Rachel.

“What is the attorney’s name?”

She closed the folder halfway.

“You don’t know him.”

That answer told me more than a name would have.

Three weeks earlier, Marcus had called my bank pretending to be my financial adviser. The branch manager had recognized his voice from a previous visit and contacted me directly.

Two days after that, Rachel had asked whether I still kept Thomas’s death certificate in the home office.

I had answered both of them politely.

Then I called Daniel Price, the attorney who had handled the farm sale.

Daniel did not tell me I was being paranoid.

He asked me to save every message, change every password and install security cameras inside the house.

The small black camera above the pantry door looked like part of the alarm system. Another sat on the bookshelf behind Marcus.

A third faced the hallway and front entrance.

All three were recording.

“I’m not signing anything,” I said.

Marcus walked around the island.

Rachel stayed where she was.

“Mom,” she said quietly, “don’t make him angry.”

I looked at her.

“You brought him here.”

“We came together because you’ve been avoiding us.”

“I spoke to you yesterday.”

“You refused to discuss the money.”

“That is not the same as avoiding you.”

Marcus stopped beside my chair.

He was close enough that I could smell coffee on his breath.

“You don’t need three million dollars.”

“Neither do you.”

His hand closed around my upper arm.

Not hard at first.

Just enough to make his point.

“You’re seventy-four,” he said. “What are you going to do with it?”

I looked down at his fingers.

“Take your hand off me.”

“Answer the question.”

“Take your hand off me.”

He pulled me away from the island.

My hip struck the corner of the chair, and I lost my footing. I reached for the counter but caught only the edge of the document.

The paper slid to the floor with me.

I landed on my left side.

For a moment, the kitchen tilted.

The blue coffee cup remained on the counter above me, rocking once before becoming still.

Rachel stepped back.

“Marcus.”

He looked down at me.

His face had gone pale, but he did not offer his hand.

“You should’ve just listened.”

I Let Them Think I Was Helpless

Pain moved from my hip into my lower back.

I stayed on the floor.

Not because I could not stand.

Because the silent alarm button was attached beneath the lower cabinet beside my right hand.

Daniel had insisted on it after Marcus called the bank.

I moved my fingers along the cabinet trim until I found the small rubber switch.

I pressed it once.

There was no sound.

The system sent an alert to the security company, Daniel and local police.

Marcus turned toward the hallway.

“Where are the bank papers?”

I drew my knees closer.

“There are no bank papers here.”
