Hidden Moral Stories

“You Have Three Babies. Give One to Your Brother,” My Father Said After I Gave Birth Without Any of Them Beside Me. When I Refused, He Lifted My Newborn From the Bassinet and Turned Toward My Brother’s Waiting Wife… but Before He Reached the Door, I Pressed the Small Red Button He Had Failed to Notice.

Part 2 of 3

“Every last one.”

His eyes filled.

“I missed their first breath.”

“You’ll be here for everything that follows.”

For a while, I felt peaceful. Exhausted and sore, certainly, but surrounded by something so precious that the rest of the world seemed far away.

Then Ruth returned my call.

When I told her the babies had arrived, her voice brightened.

“We’ll come this afternoon.”

I nearly reminded her that she and Leonard had refused to come when I actually needed them. Instead, I said yes. Some hopeful part of me still believed that seeing their grandchildren might soften them.

Ruth arrived with Leonard, Caleb, and Marissa.

At first, they behaved like ordinary visitors. My mother asked about the procedure. Caleb peered into the bassinets and remarked on how tiny the babies were. Marissa hardly acknowledged me, keeping her attention fixed on the children.

Then Leonard drew a chair close to my bed.

“Have you thought about how difficult three babies will be?”

I gave a weary smile. “We’ve thought about almost nothing else.”

Nobody smiled back.

My father glanced at Caleb. Ruth lowered her eyes.

A quiet warning moved through me.

“What is this?” I asked.

Leonard folded his hands.

“You know how long Caleb and Marissa have wanted a child.”

“Yes, I do.”

“And now you have three.”

He said the number as though he were discussing three pieces of furniture in an overcrowded room.

“What are you suggesting?”

Marissa stepped forward.

“We could raise one of them.”

For a moment, I wondered whether the medication had distorted her words.

“Excuse me?”

“We could offer one of the babies a wonderful home,” she continued. “You would still have two.”

I looked at Caleb, waiting for him to laugh or correct her. Instead, he nodded.

“It would stay within the family.”

A sickness unrelated to the procedure settled in my stomach. Their prepared phrases, their exchanged glances, and my mother’s refusal to look at me made the truth unmistakable: they had discussed this before coming.

“How long have you been planning this?”

Ruth finally spoke.

“Claire, just hear them out.”

“You knew?”

“We’re trying to find a solution that could bless everyone.”

“My children are not a problem requiring your solution.”

Leonard’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t be unreasonable.”

“There is nothing to discuss. The answer is no.”

Marissa looked offended, as though I had withdrawn something already promised to her.

“You have three babies, Claire.”

“And each one is my child.”

Caleb rose from his chair.

“You know what we’ve been through.”

“I do, and I have shown you compassion for years. But your sorrow does not create a right to one of my children.”

My father stood.

“You’ve always been selfish when your brother needs something.”

That accusation had controlled me since childhood, but it sounded different in a hospital room with three newborns beside me. It no longer carried authority. It merely revealed how far they expected me to bend.

“Leave,” I said.

Ruth lifted both hands. “Everyone is emotional. Let’s calm down.”

“Then tell them to leave, Mom.”

She remained silent.

The Line My Father Crossed

Marissa stepped toward the nearest bassinet.

“Don’t touch them,” I warned.

She stopped, but my father did not.

Leonard moved past her, bent down, and lifted one of my sons before I could reach him.

Every part of me became alert.

“Put my baby back.”

He held the child against his chest and turned slightly toward Marissa, whose arms had already begun to rise.

“Dad, give him to me now.”

Caleb moved closer.

“Let Marissa hold him. Stop making everything difficult.”

“No.”

I forced myself upright, ignoring the pain across my abdomen.

“Hand me my son.”

Leonard stared at me with the familiar expression he used whenever someone challenged him.

“You need to learn that the world does not revolve around what you want.”

“He is not something you can give away.”

I reached toward the baby. My father raised one hand and struck the side of my face, quick and sharp enough to make me lose my balance against the pillows.

My son began to cry.
