Part 2 of 3

Patricia stood immediately.

“Is Evelyn all right?”

“The doctors are treating her now.”

Bennett rushed into the hallway.

He had barely reached the waiting area when Dr. Cole briefly emerged to speak with him.

“Your wife suffered a significant postpartum hemorrhage,” the doctor explained. “She’s receiving emergency treatment, and the team is working to stabilize her.”

Bennett’s face went pale.

“She called me.”

Dr. Cole looked at him.

“Then you knew she was asking for help.”

“I thought she was exaggerating.”

“She was describing symptoms of a medical emergency.”

Bennett sank into a chair.

For the first time that day, he seemed to understand what his wife had been trying to tell him.

But the consequences of his choices were only beginning.

The Confidential Report

While I was undergoing treatment, another problem was unfolding within the Whitcomb family.

Months earlier, Charles had quietly become concerned about the paternity of Natalie’s unborn child.

He had learned something about his daughter’s marriage that made him question whether Graham was the baby’s biological father.

Rather than confront Natalie directly, Charles had consulted the family’s attorney and arranged for a private prenatal paternity test with the required consent.

The laboratory results had arrived before Oliver was born.

They excluded Graham as the child’s biological father.

Charles had kept the report hidden.

He knew that his family’s carefully planned celebration would be overshadowed if the truth became public.

More importantly, he feared that the revelation might complicate the trust provisions he had created around his expected grandson.

The test did not establish that Oliver was unrelated to the Whitcomb family. Natalie was still his mother.

But the report raised questions Charles had no intention of answering.

His attorney, Caroline Foster, had repeatedly urged him to address the matter honestly before making any formal declarations about the trust.

Charles ignored her.

Now, as the family gathered in the hospital, Caroline arrived after receiving another urgent call from him.

She carried the confidential report in a sealed envelope.

“Charles, we need to discuss the trust documents before you make any further announcements,” she said.

Charles glanced toward the waiting area.

“Not here.”

“You should have dealt with this weeks ago.”

Bennett, returning from the surgical floor, heard the exchange.

“Dealt with what?”

Neither answered.

He noticed the envelope.

“What are you hiding?”

Charles attempted to move past him.

“This is a private legal matter.”

Bennett stepped aside but refused to let the conversation end.

“My wife is fighting to recover, and you’ve spent the entire day celebrating a family heir. If there’s something important about that celebration, I want to know.”

Caroline looked toward Charles.

“The information concerns Natalie and Graham. They should be involved in this conversation.”

The Truth Behind the Family Heir

An hour later, Charles, Patricia, Natalie, Graham, and Bennett gathered in a private consultation room.

Oliver remained safely with Natalie.

Caroline placed the envelope on the table.

“This report contains sensitive information. Charles received it before Oliver’s birth.”

Natalie stared at her father.

“What report?”

Charles looked away.

Caroline continued carefully.

“The prenatal paternity test did not identify Graham as Oliver’s biological father.”

Nobody moved.

Graham stared at Natalie.

“What does that mean?”

Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.

“Graham, I wanted to tell you. I was afraid.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Bennett turned toward his father.

“You knew?”

Charles said nothing.

“Dad, did you know before today?”

Finally, Charles nodded.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

Bennett stared at him.

“You let everyone celebrate a story you knew wasn’t true?”

“Oliver is still my grandson.”

“Then why did you hide the report?”

Charles straightened his jacket.

“Because this family has a reputation, Bennett. Because the trust arrangements are complicated. Because some matters should be handled privately.”

Bennett shook his head.

“You spent the entire day telling us Oliver mattered more than Lily because he was your precious heir.”

Charles frowned.

“That has nothing to do with this.”

“It has everything to do with this.”

For the first time, Bennett spoke without trying to please his father.

“My wife nearly lost her life while I was here repeating your words. I treated my own daughter like she mattered less because you taught me to.”

Patricia began crying quietly.

Natalie held Oliver closer.

“Whatever happens between Graham and me,” she said, “Oliver is an innocent baby. He didn’t ask for any of this.”

Bennett looked at his nephew.

“Neither did Lily.”

The Woman Who Finally Chose Herself

I woke up the following morning in a recovery room.

My body felt heavy, and my throat was dry.

A nurse explained that the medical team had controlled the bleeding and that I would need careful monitoring.

Then she told me Lily was healthy and doing well.

I began crying with relief.

“Can I see her?”

“Of course. We’ll bring her to you as soon as you’re ready.”

A little later, Lily was placed gently in my arms.

I kissed her forehead.

“We made it, sweetheart.”

For several minutes, nothing else mattered.

Then the nurse asked a question.

“Your husband has been waiting outside. Would you like him to visit?”

I remembered his voice on the phone.

I remembered asking him to come back.

And I remembered the way he had spoken about our daughter.
