Part 1 of 3

The Last Ride After the Funeral

Ten-year-old Elliot Merrick still had dirt on the knees of his black funeral pants when Vanessa pulled the SUV onto the shoulder of a quiet Tennessee road.

Less than an hour earlier, Elliot had watched his father’s casket disappear beneath the ground at a cemetery outside Knoxville.

He had expected them to drive home afterward.

Instead, Vanessa had remained silent for nearly forty minutes, steering farther away from the city until the neighborhoods disappeared and gave way to fields, trees, and narrow country roads.

Then she stopped.

Vanessa turned off the engine but did not look at him.

“Get out, Elliot.”

He stared at her.

“What?”

“Take your backpack and get out.”

For several seconds, Elliot genuinely thought he had misunderstood her.

Vanessa Corbin had been his stepmother for almost three years. She had never been warm toward him, but she had always behaved politely whenever his father was nearby.

She remembered his school events. She bought him Christmas gifts. She occasionally asked whether he had finished his homework.

But Elliot had learned that all of Vanessa’s kindness disappeared the moment his father left the room.

Now Thomas Merrick was gone.

And so was the reason Vanessa had ever needed to pretend.

“Are we stopping somewhere?” Elliot asked.

Vanessa finally looked at him.

Her expression was strangely calm.

“No. You and I are finished.”

Elliot felt something tighten in his chest.

“I don’t understand.”

Vanessa reached into the back seat, grabbed his faded blue backpack, and dropped it beside him.

“Your father left everything to me. The house, his company, his savings, all of it. I am not spending the next eight years raising a child who isn’t mine.”

Elliot’s fingers tightened around the strap of his backpack.

“But I live with you.”

“You lived with your father.”

Her answer came without hesitation.

“That house belongs to me now.”

Elliot looked out the window.

There were no stores.

No houses.

No sidewalks.

Only a long road cutting through farmland.

“I don’t have a phone.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“Someone will help you.”

“I don’t have any money.”

“That isn’t my responsibility anymore.”

His eyes began to burn.

“Please, Vanessa. Dad wouldn’t want this.”

For the first time, irritation appeared on her face.

“Your father is no longer here to decide anything.”

Those words hurt more than Elliot expected.

He opened the door slowly.

Vanessa reached across him and pushed it wider.

“There’s a small town a few miles ahead. Start walking.”

Elliot stepped onto the roadside.

Before closing the door, he turned back.

“Did Dad really leave me nothing?”

Vanessa looked straight ahead.

“Nothing that matters.”

Then she drove away.

Elliot stood there watching the black SUV shrink into the distance until it disappeared completely.

That morning, he had lost his father.

By afternoon, he had lost his home.

At least, that was what Vanessa wanted him to believe.

The Crumpled Note in His Pocket

Elliot walked for almost two hours.

His funeral shoes rubbed against his heels, his throat became dry, and the afternoon sun felt much hotter than it had at the cemetery.

Inside his backpack were two school notebooks, a sweatshirt, and an empty water bottle.

Then he remembered something.

The paper.

Three days before Thomas passed away, Elliot had been sitting beside his father’s hospital bed when Thomas quietly slipped a folded note into his hand.

His father had looked exhausted that afternoon.

“Keep this somewhere safe.”

Elliot had unfolded it.

There was only a name and a phone number.

Adrian Merrick.

“Who is Adrian?” Elliot had asked.

Thomas had looked toward the window before answering.

“Someone I should have called a long time ago.”

Then he squeezed Elliot’s hand.

“If anything ever feels wrong, call him. Promise me.”

Elliot had promised.

He had forgotten about the note during the funeral.

Now he reached into his pocket and found it still there, wrinkled but readable.

Maybe that small piece of paper was the only thing his father had managed to leave him.

The Woman Who Opened Her Door

Near sunset, Elliot reached a small farming community outside Maryville.

He knocked on two doors before anyone answered.

At the third house, a woman in her late fifties opened the screen door.

She had silver-brown hair tied loosely behind her head and wore gardening gloves.

The moment she saw Elliot’s funeral clothes and dusty shoes, her expression changed.

“Honey, are you lost?”

Elliot tried to answer normally.

He couldn’t.

“My dad’s funeral was today.”

The woman slowly removed her gloves.

“Where is your family?”

Elliot swallowed hard.

“My stepmother left me on the road.”

The woman stared at him for a moment as if waiting for him to say he was joking.

He didn’t.

She immediately opened the door.

“Come inside. My name is Diane Porter.”

Diane was an elementary school librarian who had lived alone since her husband passed several years earlier.

She gave Elliot water, a turkey sandwich, fruit, and a pair of soft socks after noticing the blisters on his heels.

Only after he had eaten did she ask him to explain what had happened.

When Elliot finished, he pulled out the crumpled paper.

“My dad told me to call this man.”

Diane read the name.

“Do you know him?”

Elliot shook his head.

“I’ve never met him.”
