She dialed the number.

No answer.

She tried again twenty minutes later.

Still nothing.

That night, Diane made up the guest room for him.

As she turned off the hallway light, Elliot spoke quietly.

“What if he doesn’t want me either?”

Diane stopped.

She walked back and sat on the edge of the bed.

“Then we figure out the next step tomorrow.”

She placed a hand gently on his shoulder.

“But tonight, you have dinner in your stomach, a roof over your head, and an adult who knows where you are. You are not sleeping beside a road.”

It was the first time that day Elliot felt safe enough to close his eyes.

The Man on the Other End of the Phone

The next morning, Diane called again.

This time, someone answered.

“Hello?”

Diane introduced herself and carefully explained why she was calling.

The instant she said Elliot Merrick’s name, the man became silent.

“Elliot?”

Diane looked toward the boy.

“Yes.”

“Thomas Merrick’s son?”

“Yes.”

Another pause followed.

Then Diane explained the funeral, the roadside, and Vanessa’s claim that Thomas had left everything to her.

The man’s voice changed.

“Put Elliot on the phone.”

Elliot took it.

“Hello?”

The response came gently.

“Elliot, my name is Adrian. Thomas was my older brother.”

Elliot froze.

His father had always said they had no close family.

“You’re my uncle?”

“I am.”

“Why have I never met you?”

Adrian exhaled slowly.

“Because your father and I made a very stupid mistake years ago. We allowed one argument to become years of silence.”

Elliot did not know what to say.

Adrian continued.

“Your dad called me twelve days ago. It was the first time we had spoken in almost six years.”

Elliot’s eyes filled.

“What did he say?”

“He told me he was worried about you.”

Adrian paused.

“And he made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would find you.”

The Uncle Who Arrived With Questions

Adrian Merrick arrived from Nashville the following afternoon.

He was forty-six, tall, dark-haired, and dressed in a simple charcoal suit.

When he stepped from his car, Elliot noticed something immediately.

He had Thomas’s eyes.

Adrian stopped several feet away as though he did not want to frighten him.

Then he crouched to Elliot’s level.

“I should have been part of your life years ago.”

Elliot stared at him.

“Dad said we didn’t really have family.”

Adrian nodded sadly.

“Your dad was angry with me, and I was too proud to fix it. Adults sometimes lose years protecting feelings that were never worth protecting.”

Then he held out his hand.

“But I’m here now.”

Inside Diane’s house, Adrian explained that he worked as an attorney specializing in business disputes and estate matters.

More importantly, Thomas had told him something very different from what Vanessa had told Elliot.

Thomas owned a regional warehouse and delivery company, the family home, two rental properties, and several investment accounts.

According to Thomas, most of those assets were supposed to benefit Elliot.

“Your father never told me that Vanessa would receive everything,” Adrian said.

Elliot looked confused.

“Then why did she say she owns it?”

“Because saying something and proving it are two very different things.”

Thomas had mentioned preparing estate documents through an attorney outside Knoxville.

Adrian decided to find them.

Two days later, he returned to Diane’s home carrying a thick navy folder.

His expression told Elliot that something important had happened.

Adrian sat at the kitchen table.

“I found your father’s signed estate documents.”

Elliot barely breathed.

“What do they say?”

Adrian opened the folder.

“They say that you are the primary beneficiary of most of your father’s estate.”

For several seconds, Elliot simply stared at him.

Then tears rolled down his face.

Not because of the money.

Because his father had not forgotten him.

The Second Document

Vanessa had not been completely excluded.

Thomas had provided money for her and temporary rights involving certain property.

But she was nowhere close to inheriting everything.

There was another problem.

Vanessa had presented a later document claiming Thomas had changed his plans shortly before his passing.

Under that version, almost everything went to her.

Adrian placed both documents beside each other.

“Could Dad have changed his mind?” Elliot asked.

“That is what we need to determine carefully.”

Adrian had already noticed several inconsistencies.

The later document had supposedly been completed during a period when Thomas’s condition made the claimed circumstances extremely questionable.

There were also differences in signatures, witness information, and timing.

Then Adrian discovered unusual financial transfers initiated shortly after Thomas passed.

He refused to make promises to Elliot.

“I’m not going to tell you what happened until it can be proven.”

He closed the folder.

“But I can tell you this: your father’s original instructions were very clear. He intended to protect you.”

Elliot looked down at the wrinkled note in his hands.

“So Vanessa lied to me?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“At the very least, she told you something she had no right to present as settled fact.”

Then he added quietly:

“And leaving a ten-year-old alone beside a country road created problems that no inheritance document can excuse.”
