Part 2 of 3

Then I looked at the little boy sleeping peacefully in his stroller.

And everything changed.

The Baby Who Might Have Been Mine

Graham moved another document toward me.

“Natalie, based on the dates and records we’ve obtained, there’s a possibility Oliver was conceived using an embryo created from your eggs and Preston’s sperm during your marriage.”

My hands began shaking.

Oliver might be my biological son.

The baby Preston had proudly brought to my workplace could be the child I had spent years hoping for.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?”

She wiped her face.

“Not in the beginning. Preston told me everything had been approved. He showed me documents with your signature.”

“And later?”

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“After Oliver was born, I started noticing things that didn’t make sense. Preston became upset whenever I asked about the clinic.”

Preston slammed his palm against the table.

“Enough, Vanessa.”

Oliver stirred.

I immediately turned toward the stroller.

“Please lower your voice. He’s only a baby.”

Preston looked at me with open resentment.

“Don’t tell me how to raise my son.”

I took a slow breath.

“I’m not trying to take Oliver away from anyone. I’m trying to understand what happened to the embryos I was told no longer existed.”

Graham explained that genetic testing would be necessary.

Until then, nobody could confirm Oliver’s biological connection to me.

But the medical records were troubling enough for him to seek legal review.

Preston leaned back.

“You’re doing this because you’re jealous of our family.”

I looked at the sleeping child.

“No, Preston. Whatever happens between us, Oliver deserves stability and love. He should never have to carry the consequences of decisions made before he was born.”

For the first time, Preston had nothing to say.

The Evidence Vanessa Had Hidden

Graham began collecting the documents when Vanessa spoke again.

“There’s something else.”

Preston immediately turned toward her.

“Don’t start.”

She ignored him.

“After Oliver was born, I found an email account Preston had never mentioned.”

Graham stopped.

“What was in it?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Messages from someone at the fertility clinic. Payment receipts. Copies of authorization forms. There was even a conversation about making Natalie’s signature look more accurate.”

My stomach tightened.

“You actually saw that?”

She nodded.

“I printed everything. I was afraid Preston would delete it if he found out.”

Preston stared at her.

“You went through my private messages?”

Vanessa finally looked directly at him.

“You told me Natalie had given her permission. You let me believe we were building our family honestly.”

Her voice broke.

“And when I started asking questions, you told me I was imagining things.”

Graham asked where she had kept the documents.

“My sister has copies,” Vanessa replied. “I gave them to her months ago.”

Preston’s expression changed completely.

Until that moment, he had behaved as though he could explain everything away.

Now he looked frightened.

Graham took out his notebook.

“Vanessa, I’ll need those records preserved exactly as they are. They could be important to establishing what happened.”

She nodded.

“I’ll cooperate.”

Preston shook his head.

“You’re making a terrible mistake.”

Vanessa looked down at Oliver.

“The mistake was staying silent after I started learning the truth.”

I couldn’t forgive her for what she had done to our friendship.

But I understood that telling the truth now might be the first responsible decision she had made in a long time.

The Name He Had Taken From Me

As Graham prepared to leave, I approached the stroller.

Oliver had woken up.

He watched me with curious blue-gray eyes while holding a small stuffed elephant.

“May I ask you something?” I said to Vanessa.

She nodded.

“Who chose his name?”

Vanessa looked confused.

“Preston did. He said he’d always loved the name Oliver.”

I felt my chest tighten.

Years earlier, during our fertility treatments, I had kept a little notebook filled with possible baby names.

I remembered sitting beside Preston one evening, imagining what our future children might be like.

Oliver had been my favorite name for a boy.

I had written it inside a small heart.

“That was the name I chose,” I whispered.

Vanessa stared at me.

“What?”

I looked at Preston.

“You remember the notebook.”

He said nothing.

“You remember sitting beside me when I wrote Oliver’s name.”

Vanessa slowly turned toward her husband.

“You told me you thought of it yourself.”

Preston looked at the door.

I suddenly understood something painful.

He hadn’t simply moved on with another woman.

He had carried pieces of our marriage into his new life and presented them as though they belonged entirely to him.

The possibility that Oliver was biologically connected to me was still unconfirmed.

But the name was something I remembered with absolute certainty.

I stepped away from the stroller.

“Whatever the truth turns out to be, Oliver is innocent. I want everyone to remember that.”

Graham gently touched my shoulder.

“We should talk again after your shift.”

I nodded.

I had patients waiting.

And although my entire world felt different, I still had responsibilities that mattered.

The $25,000 Payment

That evening, Graham came to my office.

Rain was falling against the hospital windows.
