I stared at the amount.

“Do you think he paid her to help with the paperwork?”

“It’s a possibility,” Graham replied. “But we need evidence before making that accusation.”

I looked at Meredith’s photograph again.

Then something occurred to me.

“I knew her before the fertility clinic.”

Graham leaned forward.

“From where?”

“She worked at the medical office where my mother received treatment years ago. I remember her because she sent our family a sympathy card after Mom passed away.”

Graham wrote that down.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes. I remember her handwriting and her silver glasses.”

He studied the photograph.

“We’ll need to verify her employment history and determine whether that earlier connection matters.”

I nodded.

But a troubling thought had already taken hold.

Meredith had known my family long before she handled my fertility records.

And now her name appeared beside a mysterious payment from my ex-husband.

At 7:26 that evening, my phone vibrated.

The message came from an unfamiliar number.

There was no greeting.

I felt tears filling my eyes.

He looked at the papers.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, headlights moved slowly through the rain.

Somewhere in Raleigh, Preston was probably trying to figure out how much Vanessa had revealed.

Somewhere else, Meredith might know exactly what had happened inside that clinic.

And Oliver was sleeping in a home built around a truth nobody had fully explained.

“Could there be another child?” I asked.

Graham was quiet for a moment.

“We don’t have evidence of that, Natalie. Group A may still be stored, or it may have been handled in another way. We need the complete records.”

I nodded.

He was right.

I couldn’t allow fear to become certainty.

But I also couldn’t ignore the possibility.

“Then we find out,” I said.

Graham closed the folder.

For the first time that day, I felt something stronger than sadness.
